Pamela Anderson pens powerful message about beauty and aging: 'Be kind to yourself'
The "Baywatch" star is shifting her focus from beauty to health with age.
Pamela Anderson is feeling "wiser" than ever.
On Monday, in an open letter via her newsletter, the 55-year-old "Baywatch" star penned a powerful message to her fans about shifting her focus away from beauty as she ages.
She began by explaining that no matter how advanced anti-aging treatments become, "we are going to get old, we just kick the can down the road a little further."
The Canadian actress pointed out that health and wellness are her main concern these days.
"As I get older, I become wiser and think less and less about looking better, and more about health and wellness," Anderson wrote. "More and more often, I look in the mirror and grin and giggle with pride rather than cry."
"I recognize myself, and I'm happy with what I see," she added.
Anderson recalled her mother sharing some unfiltered, "hard-to-hear truths," about looking older that planted seeds "of insecurity."
"She looked at me with wild eyes and said, 'The next thing that's going to go on you is your neck,' — just out of the blue," she wrote. "In other words, women compete, even with their daughters (It is what it is)."
"My mom has always said what's on her mind, no filter," Anderson continued. "She told me that when you're pretty, you're more powerful. Take 5 minutes to comb your hair and put your lipstick on, you'll be a better wife and mother..."
While she listened to her mother's advice, Anderson eventually came "not to follow someone else's rules blindly."
"I treasure my strangeness. I like to challenge beauty, the myth — especially now, I'm free, I've learned. Beauty truly comes from within. It is proven time and again," she shared. "In spite of all you might hear or take to heart, you are a beautiful creature given to the planet."
"Be kind to yourself. You are the gift," she concluded.
Last month, the model sat down with Dax Shepard on his podcast, "Armchair Expert," where she was asked what it was like to be defined by her beauty for her entire career and how that has changed as she has gotten older.
"I never felt like I was any kind of great beauty, ever," she said.
"I can't wait to see myself old," Anderson went on. "I always said I'd recognize myself when I was old in the mirror. I want to let my hair go kind of natural gray, put my little straw hat on, don't wear makeup. I mean, that's my comfortable kind of state."
The mom-of-two explained that aging hasn't been difficult for her because she never saw herself as a "classic" beauty.
"A lot of women, I think, that kind of are these classic beauties have a really hard time with aging," she said. "I always felt a little funny looking, so I don't think it's as hard for me, and I don't want to chase that, and I don't want to do all the crazy sh-t to myself."
