Since making the switch to natural deodorant a few years ago I’ve gone through a whole roster of different brands, with some being more successful than others.
I’ve definitely found my favourite, but am always on the lookout for more affordable options that perform just as well - and I may just have found it.
Native Plastic Free Deodorant
SHOP IT: Native, $18 ($13 USD)
What is it?
Native is an online brand with a focus on deodorants for men and women, as well as other personal care items like body wash, soap, and toothpaste. I came across them the way most of us find out about new brands these days (through an ad on social media), and started browsing their site to see what customers were saying about their signature deodorants.
“Excellent product! Smells divine, texture is smooth and luxurious and IT WORKS! No sweat, no body odour, no dry skin - it’s wonderful!” raved one five-star reviewer.
“I have tried SO many natural deodorants, and this by far is the best. It smells amazing, protects all day, and my pits have never been softer!” added another.
With literally thousands of other reviews just like these, I knew I had to try it for myself to find out whether the brand lives up to its hype.
Does it work?
I’ve now been using Native daily for the last few months, and after putting it to the test through multiple workouts, temperature changes and long commutes, I can say that it will definitely continue to be on heavy rotation in my daily routine.
While I’ve found that it’s a great choice for everyday activities, I did notice that if I worked up a really heavy sweat at the gym there was some wetness under my arms when using Native. I may have to stick with my favourite Soapwalla deodorant for more active days, but considering the price and the variation in scents from Native, I’ll definitely still be keeping it around.
With a super-creamy texture that applies smoothly to the underarm, I was impressed by Native’s easy application. Compared to other natural deodorants I’ve tried, there was no gritty feel, no overpowering scent, and no yellow stains on my white T-shirts like I’ve experienced before. It also kept me feeling fresh throughout the day, without having to reapply at all.
Thanks to a base of coconut oil, tapioca starch and baking soda, Native manages to be hydrating while also absorbent. It’s available in a range of interesting scents that include classics like Cucumber & Mint to rotating seasonal scents, as well as the option to create a custom scent. Just complete a short quiz, and your personalized deodorant is poured and delivered to you in two weeks.
The verdict
All Native products are free of parabens, sulfates and aluminum, making them a great choice for anyone with sensitive skin or if you’re trying to be more conscious of the ingredients that you’re using in your skincare products. Keep in mind that they are deodorants and not antiperspirants, so you’ll have to manage your expectations if you’re looking for something to keep your underarms bone dry throughout the day.
One of the biggest issues about Native’s deodorants in the past is that the plastic packaging was a big deterrent for shoppers looking to incorporate a zero-waste lifestyle into their beauty routines. Thankfully, all that has changed now that the brand offers five of their bestselling scents in a convenient paper package that’s made from wood harvested from responsibly managed forests.
