Max is no longer the top dog.

On Oct. 30, the American Kennel Club (AKC), a nonprofit organization and the world's largest purebred dog registry, shared a release with its most popular dog names for 2024.

The AKC determines the top 10 names for female and male dogs by analyzing AKC registration statistics and AKC Canine Partners enrollments. The organization started sharing its list of the most popular dog names in 2022.

For 2022 and 2023, the top male dog was Max, but now, the popular name's reign as number one is over. According to the AKC's findings, Milo is now the most common name among male dogs, jumping from fifth place in 2023. Max fell one spot to number two for the AKC's 2024 list.

Max's domination of naming charts started before 2022. Rover.com, which also compiles an annual list of the most popular pet names, has the name listed as one of the most popular male dog names from 2013-2023.

Other changes in the AKC's lists of the most popular dog names include Toby's first appearance on the list, debuting at the number 7 spot. While the male dog list may have seen a power shift, the top female dog name remains. Luna is the most popular female dog name for the third consecutive year, per the AKC.

"People put a great deal of thought into naming their dogs and often spend hours trying to pick the perfect name to fit their new pet."

The AKC also tracks the most popular dog breeds based on its registration statistics. For 31 years, the Labrador Retriever ranked as the most popular dog breed in the U.S. In 2022, the Lab was usurped by the French Bulldog, who kept the most popular title for 2023.
