Marc Jacobs Invites Us Into His Dream World for Fall 2024
A Marc Jacobs show is a singular event — not only because it happens off calendar, starts promptly and generally ends within 10 minutes. The designer has, over the last 40 years, created a universe that's uniquely his. The environment he's built for his shows (the single row of numbered fold-up chairs, the black and white collection notes in his brand's signature font, the uncertainty as to whether the show's actually over once the last model has done her turn down the runway) is just a part of it.
On a beautiful summer Monday evening, the brand presented its Fall 2024 collection inside the New York Public Library to a crowd of press, stylists and friends who buckled up their Kikis for the occasion and wore pieces from seasons' past. It wasn't just in celebration of the milestone anniversary: Jacobs' latest is not just imaginative and playful in a way that's distinctly Marc, it's also self-reflective, revisiting motifs and themes from the past four decades and pushing them into the current vision.
The autumnal offering continues the "paper doll" theme introduced on the runway earlier this year, with its awkward-but-intentionally-oversized shapes (think raised shoulders, too-long sleeves, stiff circle skirts). The footwear is similarly playful: white heeled mules with an oversized sole (almost like pedicure slippers, if they had stilettos), colorful puffy pumps with a pointed toe that curved upwards (an exaggerated version of the shoes you'd put on plastic dolls), lace-up white leather shoes (oversized to an almost clownish degree). The overall effect is of fashion drawings you would doodle as a child or your most fabulous dolls coming to life and confidently roaming the big city.
There are nods to Jacobs' older design aesthetic, too — the white perforated lace felt reminiscent of his work for Louis Vuitton and even certain Daisy fragrance campaigns; polka dots remain a constant in his collections. While you can sense these references, they don't feel self-indulgent, rather they operate as a thread connecting each chapter of his professional life, across eras and brands. In the show notes, Jacobs titled the collection simply "Joy, period."
"We use fashion to embrace bold and courageous self-expression to articulate and showcase our inner selves, allowing us to freely explore and display our thoughts, desires and identities in a deeper pursuit of joy, beauty and personal transformation," the text read. "While the future remains unwritten, I am steadfast in my daily practice of choosing love over hate, faith over fear and finding pause in reflection. I believe in living with authenticity — free from validation and permission of absurd conservatism and societal norms."
