Lauren Toyota opens up about meeting Gwen Stefani: 'She was jealous I was Japanese'

Lauren Toyota is sharing some juicy memories.

The 40-year-old Canadian influencer took to Instagram on Wednesday to post a candid video sharing her experience after first meeting Gwen Stefani, 53, and her old band, No Doubt.

"I never spill tea, but this is something I've got to talk about," Toyota began, before explaining that she interviewed No Doubt while she was working at Much Music around 2014.

"I was excited because I liked No Doubt," Toyota shared. "When I met them, all of them were great — all the boys were great.

"Gwen herself was, I don't know, a little stand-offish."

Toyota continued to describe her first impression of Gwen, who was apparently eyeing the former Much Music VJ in a judgemental manner.

"You know when a girl looks at you up-and-down and is judging you and you're like, 'Oh, God. What's wrong with me?' Well now I know," Toyota added. "She was jealous because I'm Japanese and she is not Japanese and wishes she was?

"Did you live through 2020, Gwen Stefani? Have you learned nothing?"

People were taken aback by Toyota's story, with some people sharing their own thoughts on Stefani's recent controversy in the comments.

"It reeks of a trend where, instead of reckoning with their own privilege and racism, they desperately try to find a marginalized identifier to hold on to and say, 'See, I'm just like you,'" someone replied.

"Bananas," commented recording artist Jarina De Marco.

"I can see all this being true. That she was jealous of you and that she learned nothing in 2020 or from her years of appropriation," one person added.

"Omg. So, so cringy and had to chuckle at your story," another person chimed in.

"Memories of disappointment," someone wrote.

"Lauren, I know you have dirt on every celeb that came through that MUCH studio," someone else penned, to which Toyota replied saying, "Wouldn't you like to know."

Following an interview with Allure published Tuesday, Stefani has been facing some criticism after claiming she's Japanese despite having an Italian American father.

According to the "Hollaback Girl" singer, Stefani's relationship with Japan is innocent and she's simply a "super fan" of the East Asian country's culture.

The Voice coach's father worked in marketing for Yamaha motorcycles, which had him travelling between California and Japan for 18 years.

"That was my Japanese influence and that was a culture that was so rich with tradition, yet so futuristic [with] so much attention to art and detail and discipline and it was fascinating to me," Stefani shared, adding that she travelled to Harajuku as an adult and was in awe of Japanese culture. "I said, 'My God, I'm Japanese and I didn't know it.'

"I am, you know."
