Katie Couric weighs in on Lisa LaFlamme dismissal: 'Really boneheaded'
Katie Couric isn't afraid to share her thoughts.
On Wednesday, the award-winning journalist took to Instagram to weigh in on CTV's recent dismissal of Lisa LaFlamme, who was the Chief News Anchor and Senior Editor for the station. She worked for the broadcaster for 35 years.
According to Bell Media, "CTV recently advised LaFlamme that it had made the business decision to move its acclaimed news show, CTV National News, and the role of its Chief News Anchor in a different direction."
In the post, the 65-year-old shared a photo of LaFlamme with her Canadian Screen Award, which she won for Best News Anchor earlier this year.
In the caption, the American reporter called the decision to let LaFlamme go "really boneheaded" and offered theories as to why she was "unceremoniously dumped."
"Hey all…have you read about Lisa LaFlamme who was unceremoniously dumped by CTV because…well…perhaps because she let her hair go grey or she was making too much money or the guys in charge are idiots," Couric penned. "Yes, because of changing advertising models, mainstream media profits are declining significantly. But the way this was handled was really boneheaded."
Couric's post also referenced a New York Times article about two male broadcasters who retired at age 69 and 77. These men were allowed to bid viewers farewell on air, while LaFlamme was not.
The mother-of-two ended her caption by inviting her followers to share their thoughts in the comments.
"Needless to say, this has created a major PR disaster for the folks in charge at CTV. We need to see women aging in every arena. Basically, this sucks. Feel free to sound off in comments. Your friend, Katie," she concluded.
In the comments, fans were quick to support Couric's message and thanked her for speaking out.
"Katie! Thank you for sharing about this!" wrote Canadian influencer The Birds Papaya.
"As a Canadian, also big fan of Lisa’s work, I’m happy to see this news spread," shared someone else.
"Thank you for posting about this!!! We adore Lisa LaFlamme and miss her so much...I am glad the women at the network are making their voices heard," commented a follower.
"As a Canadian woman raising daughters, well said Katie," wrote a fan.
"She's our national treasure," added another.
