Justin Trudeau takes daughter Ella to watch 'Oppenheimer' in theatres: 'Iconic dad'
The Canadian prime minister says he's "balancing things out" after watching "Barbie" with his son, Xavier.
Justin Trudeau is getting in some quality family time.
On Tuesday, the 51-year-old Canadian prime minister shared a photo of himself on social media with his 14-year-old daughter, Ella, at the movie theatre. In the shot, the father-daughter duo posed in front of an IMAX poster for "Oppenheimer."
For the screening, Trudeau wore a black long-sleeve henley T-shirt, blue jeans and a grey Gibson trucker snapback hat. His daughter opted for a comfy look, sporting a white zippered hoodie, a burnt orange tank top and brown camouflage sweatpants.
"Balancing things out: 'Oppenheimer' with Ella," Trudeau wrote in his caption, referencing a similar post he made over the weekend where he watched "Barbie" with his 15-year-old son, Xavier.
Some people showed their appreciation for Trudeau's post, with many noting that he's a good father for spending time with his children.
"Now that's what I call an iconic dad," someone wrote.
"Always great to see parents enjoy their time with their kids," penned someone else.
"Just a dad going out to a movie with his daughter. Period. You are entitled to have that. Have fun," an Instagram user shared.
"Great dad. Good for you making them a priority. It's hard for the kids when parents separate," another added.
Others weren't too enthusiastic about seeing the Liberal Party leader take a night off from work.
"Why not balance the budget instead," one person replied.
"Things just balance themselves out, kinda like deficits and budgets, right?" someone chimed in.
On Sunday, Trudeau shared a similar photo of himself and his teenaged son posing in front of a "Barbie" poster at the movies.
In that snap, the politician rocked a pink hoodie with the words "love you more," while Xavier wore a fuchsia Garage T-shirt.
"We're team 'Barbie," Trudeau captioned that post.
People showed their love for the father-son moment in the comments of his Instagram post. Some called out many of the blatant hate comments others were sharing, which included homophobic replies insinuating the prime minister was gay with some even suggesting Trudeau was dating his son.
"Love it! (And I thought Canadians were nice)," wrote American journalist Katie Couric.
"Love it, Mr. Prime Minister! Thank you," someone raved.
"Pretty sad that a father can't go out with his son without homophobic comments being made," someone else added.
"I personally find it appalling that the man can't just have a day off to be a dad and have fun at a movie!" one person replied.
Last week, Trudeau shared on social media that he and his wife, 48-year-old Sophie Grégoire, were separating after 18 years of marriage.
"Hi everyone, Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate," Trudeau's statement on Aug. 2 read. "As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build. For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our and their privacy."
