Jamie Otis is raising her son to 'respect women' in body positive message
Jamie Otis is sharing an important body positive message with her fans.
On Tuesday, the 35-year-old "Married At First Sight" star shared a video with her more than 850,000 followers enjoying a swimming pool with her two-year-old son, adding the song "Victoria's Secret" by Jax to the clip.
The reality star paired the video with a caption breaking down the lyrics of the song and reiterating its point, calling out the renowned lingerie brand for its "unrealistic" beauty standards.
"Victoria's Secret has been revealed. If only this song existed when I was a little girl starving myself to look like the 'Angels' I saw on TV," she wrote before dissecting the lyrics of the song.
"'God, I wish somebody would've told me when I was younger that all bodies aren't the same," the lyrics, which Otis mouthed along to, read. "Photoshop, itty bitty models on magazine covers told me I was overweight. I stopped eating. What a bummer. Can't have carbs and a hot girl summer. If I could go back and tell myself when I was younger, I'd say, psst: I know Victoria's Secret and girl, you wouldn't believe it! She's an old man who lives in Ohio making money off of girls like me.'"
Otis explained that while the lyrics aren't hers, they deeply resonated with her.
"Song and lyrics are obviously not mine. They are by the amazing Jax (who I literally voted for way back when she was a kiddo on American Idol! l I knew I liked her — even way back then!!)."
Otis admitted that ironically, she was wearing a Victoria's Secret swimsuit while filming the video, but now feels torn about supporting the company going forward.
"Ironically, the suit I'm wearing is a VS suit and I've always liked VS," she wrote. "Gah, I don't even know how to feel about it now."
She concluded by sharing that she plans on raising her son to respect women and their bodies "completely."
"I'll be raising my sweet baby boy (who was having an absolute blast making this Reel with me) to respect women completely. Their bodies, their voices and their choices," Otis penned.
Otis's post was quickly met with applause from fans for raising her son to "treat women well," and for calling out Victoria's Secret for the "harmful effect it had on young girls."
"Thank you for sharing! It's so important the moms of this generation begin teaching their sons to treat women well. Previous generations have produced very questionable men in today's society. I repeat, very questionable," one person commented. "So it's up to newer moms to change the trend, and raise men who actually respect women. Secondly, thank you for dragging VS for the harmful effect they've had on young girls. You rock!"
"Thank you for being so raw and open!" added another.
"You truly are an inspiration to all women of all different ages!" someone else chimed in.
"You're amazing for this! So true!" one person wrote.
Another added: "That's really important to me too, teaching my son to respect women!"
In June, Otis shared another body-positive video alongside "Big Brother" alum Nicole Franzel-Arroyo, addressing the expectation that women need to "bounce back" after having a baby.
"It's OK if you haven't lost the baby weight yet — even if your baby isn't a baby anymore!" she captioned the clip, paired with the hashtags "#MomminAintEasy," "#MomsOfInstagram," "#MomBod and "#MomBodLove."
