Jamie Otis says it's 'OK to break down and cry' in new mental health post: 'Love this'
Jamie Otis is reminding her fans that it's OK to cry.
On Tuesday, the 35-year-old "Married At First Sight" star shared a throwback Instagram Reel alongside her husband, Doug Hehner, with an emotional caption opening up about her mental health and letting her fans know that it's fine to show their emotions.
"Don't let life f— you up," the on-screen text reads over a photo of Otis and Hehner crying.
"This was a pretty low point for us," the mom-of-two captioned the post for her more than 850,000 followers. "We had been through it together. We lost our firstborn son, we lost jobs we love, we lost money and so many other things."
She explained that after staying "strong" for so long, "it caught up and it took a toll on our relationship and mental health," adding she wishes she "could go back and tell myself that there isn't anything 'wrong' with me — or us."
"If you're battling through something I hope you know you aren't alone," she assured her fans. "If you've reached your 'breaking point,' keep going."
Otis added, "Know that it is OK to break down and cry. It is OK to get angry and scream."
The reality star pointed out that while things don't necessarily "get easier overnight," having the "right therapist, the right meds and the right people by your side," can do wonders.
Fans were quick to thank Otis for sharing such a personal moment and advocating for mental health.
"Kudos to you and Doug for your honesty and vulnerability," one person commented, while another added, "You have no idea how much I needed something like this today. Thank you."
"Wow, this is such a powerful statement and I agree with you 100 per cent. Life gives you so many ups and downs, but the fact that you both stuck it out and fought for your marriage is commendable. Mental health is very important in handling day-to-day life," someone shared. "My husband and I can truly relate to your truth."
"You are such an inspiration and real!" another wrote.
A fan commented, "Thank you for being so open and trying to break the stigma of mental health."
Otis routinely shares "vulnerable," mental health-championing, and body positive content with her followers. In October 2021, the reality TV star took to YouTube with an emotional video following a call with her therapist.
"I just got off a call with my therapist — our couples therapist," she said. "Honestly, I'm so overwhelmed and I feel like I'm not making the right decisions. I hope I am doing everything that I can for my family and that I'm making the right choices.
"It's been a long time that I've felt internal peace. I've been struggling for a long time. I'm never pretending to be anything that I'm not, and I don't want to pretend anything that I'm not now."
