It's no secret that Gwyneth Paltrow has a tendency to stir controversy and prompt debate. From her bizarre diet tips to her so-called vagina-scented candle, Paltrow and shock value are two peas in a pod. This time, the 48-year-old has managed to blow our hair back by claiming to have single-handedly started the face mask trend amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic- and Twitter is not having it.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, the "Shakespeare in Love" actress was praised for sharing a selfie wearing a mask back in Feb. 2020. The remark prompted the star to insinuate that moment was the starting point of mask popularity.
“This is a familiar pattern in my life," Paltrow said. "I do something early, everyone is like: ‘What is she doing? She’s insane.’ And then it’s adopted by the culture."
“En route to Paris. Paranoid? Prudent? Panicked? Placid? Pandemic? Propaganda? Paltrow’s just going to go ahead and sleep with this thing on the plane. I’ve already been in this movie. Stay safe. Don’t shake hands. Wash hands frequently,” Paltrow captioned the mask selfie.
Fans immediately furrowed their brows at Paltrow's confidence and has since stirred up quite a few reactions online.
"Truly she is the gift that keeps on giving and her utter lack of self-awareness," one person wrote.

"It took a year, but Gwyneth Paltrow figured out how to exploit the pandemic," someone tweeted, while others simply mocked The Goop founder for making such an obviously inaccurate statement.
"So grateful Gwyneth Paltrow invented masks," one person wrote while another added, "I do not want to be rich however I do want to be the same kind of crazy as Gwyneth Paltrow that is wealth-induced."
"One thing you can always count on is Gwyneth Paltrow being completely self-centered and never making any sense," an annoyed reader wrote.

Other fans urged Paltrow to humble herself for taking credit for something that has been practiced in several Asian countries for decades.
"One thing miss mamas knows how to do is appropriate Asian culture and pretend she invented it," tweeted another.
"So she’s just ignoring the fact that wearing masks correctly has been commonplace for many East Asian people for a long time now? Do they just not exist in her eyes?" one unimpressed person wrote.

So she’s just ignoring the fact that wearing masks *correctly!* has been common place for many East Asian people for a long time now. Do they just not exist in her eyes. 🤷🏻♀️

Despite alleging she was wearing masks long before it was popular, Paltrow said that she was still "one of the first" people to test positive for the virus.
"I wore [the mask] on the plane, but I didn’t wear it to the function that I was going to," Paltrow said. "And actually ended up getting COVID and coming home and being one of the first people that I had heard of to have it."
