Grimes shares why she used a surrogate for her and Elon Musk's second child
Musical artist Grimes, who recently welcomed her second child - a baby girl named Exa Dark Sideræl Musk - into the world with Elon Musk, has spoken about how the pair used a surrogate. When discussing the new addition to their family in a recent Vanity Fair interview, Grimes (who was born Claire Boucher) also opened up about her difficult first pregnancy with her son, X Æ A-12.
Sadly during her pregnancy with 'X', Grimes said at some points she was unable to walk, "He was pressing on my nerves, so I kept collapsing. I took a few steps and collapsed. It was kind of scary, because you don’t want to fall a lot when you’re eight months pregnant. So I would just crawl to the bathroom and crawl back or whatever."
She continued on to say that she also came very close to losing her life at one point, "Like, I haemorrhaged. It was scary."
These health scares, it's believed, are what lead to her and Elon opting to explore surrogacy for their second child, which also (and in part due to the pandemic) meant they were able to keep the pregnancy a secret right up until yesterday, when the news broke after a journalist heard a baby crying at Grimes' home in the middle of their interview.
She also gave an insight into her and the Tesla boss' unique relationship, explaining that they're not together in a traditional sense but that they hope to have more children together in the future and are extremely close.
"There's no real word for it – I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we’re very fluid," Grimes explained. "We live in separate houses. We’re best friends. We see each other all the time... We just have our own thing going on, and I don’t expect other people to understand it. This is the best it’s ever been... We’ve always wanted at least three or four [children]."
Many other notable names including Priyanka Chopra-Jonas and Nick Jonas, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian have welcomed children via surrogate.
