Jessica Klick's daughter, Sienna, 11, was at a friend’s house when they decided to try on some fake nails that her friend had received as a gift.

While applying one of the nails, a few drops of glue fell onto Sienna’s cotton sock. The glue quickly became extremely hot, spreading across the top of her foot and causing a severe burn. Fortunately, the friend’s mother was nearby and immediately assisted, cutting off the sock and rinsing the area until Jessica could arrive.

"I was in the shower when the other mom called," Jessica, who lives in Rhode Island, tells PEOPLE exclusively. "She called almost right away. I heard my phone ring twice, and on the second ring, I had my 9-year-old son answer it," she adds. "He came to tell me what happened. I stepped out to talk to the mom and could tell by her voice that it was more than a superficial injury."

She continues, "I went over to her house as soon as I could. Luckily, she lives just a few minutes down the road."

When the mother of two arrived, she found Sienna upset and in tears. Since the incident, which occurred over a month ago, Jessica says Sienna experienced significant pain in the first week or two. While most of the burn has healed, there is still one open area that needs to be covered. Although Sienna seems to be in less pain now, the area remains very sensitive to touch.

"This wasn’t a superficial burn or injury; it was a deep second-degree burn that caused a lot of pain, limited her activities for over a month, and will leave a deep scar," Jessica says.

In August, Jessica decided to share her daughter's experience on TikTok to raise awareness about the potential dangers of this glue. Her video has since garnered more than 141,000 views and 600 comments.

"the way my jaw dropped when I saw how severe that burn was. I hope your daughter is OK now!" one comment says.

"I had no idea. Glad the mom was there to help your daughter," another user writes.

"Many girls her age begin to experiment with these products, and most parents don’t realize that this chemical reaction can occur," Jessica continues. "I've received positive feedback on my post, with many parents thanking me for spreading awareness and others sharing similar experiences."

She emphasizes that more people need to understand that this chemical reaction can happen with various fabrics, particularly cotton and wool. "I want to let parents know that if they choose to allow their children to use fake nails, they should supervise closely to help prevent what happened to my daughter."
