From 'Emily in Paris' to 'Alien: Romulus,' blacks and metallics are all the rage in celebrity fashion: Vote for the best and worst-dressed stars this week
Red carpets were riddled with dark-toned gowns and shiny dresses this past week, with most celebrities seeming to avoid bright colours.
Between the French glam seen in "Emily in Paris" to the dark horror in "Alien: Romulus," it's clear why numerous celebrities chose to wear blacks and metallics on red carpets this week. That surge in neutral colours could also be the way many stars are hinting they're ready to welcome autumn, as summer slowly comes to an end.
Earlier this week, A-listers stepped onto red carpets for movie and TV show premieres in cities like Los Angeles, London and Edinburgh. Lily Collins and Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu brought the drama with their looks for the "Emily in Paris" pink carpet, while Cailee Spaeny and Isabela Merced went futuristic for the "Alien: Romulus" premiere. Jenna Ortega also channelled her inner goth to kick off her "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" press tour.
On our worst-dressed list, silver and gold metallic looks seemed to be all the rage. Awkwafina slyly hinted at the title of her new movie, "Jackpot," while Sofia Vergara, Saoirse Ronan and Elizabeth Banks opted for shiny sequins at their events and Halle Berry chose to show up in lingerie for the premiere of "The Union."

BEST DRESSED: Lily Collins
Lily Collins looked très chic wearing a custom black Armani Privé gown for the premiere of "Emily in Paris" Season 4 Part 1 in Los Angeles on Wednesday. The 35-year-old actress stepped onto the pink carpet wearing a shining sleeveless gown featuring peplum at the hip, embroidered rectangular paillettes and a geometric pattern.
The lead of the Netflix hit series seems to finally be channelling some of that French je ne sais quoi into her style (maybe it's just her new sleek bob), showing off diamond Cartier jewelry and Manolo Blahnik heels. She was styled by Andrew Mukamal, while makeup artist Fiona Stiles gave the star a sultry look using products from Merit.
Stiles used the beauty brand's recently-released Great Skin Priming Moisturizer, saying in a statement she "perfected" the actress' skin using The Minimalist Foundation and the Brush No. 1. Collins' look was further completed using Merit's Bronze Balm Sheer Bronzer, Day Glow Highlighting Balm and Brow 1980 Volumizing Pomade. She added a "touch of sexiness," too, using the Solo Shadow Matte Eye Colour.
WORST DRESSED: Awkwafina
Awkwafina aimed for the "Jackpot" at the premiere of her latest film in Los Angeles on Tuesday, but ultimately missed the grand prize when it came to her fashion choices. The 36-year-old actress wore a gold sequin dress featuring a mock neck and long sleeves that left the "Crazy Rich Asians" star looking pretty uncomfortable.
While the frumpy outfit — which was paired with hoop earrings and bangles, as well as platform open-toe beige heels — didn't necessarily land her a win, it'd be wrong to say her soft glam make-up look and nicely tousled hair didn't add a touch of elegance.
BEST DRESSED: Jenna Ortega
Netflix hit series "Wednesday" might not currently be on everyone's minds as Season 2 is still at least several months away, but that doesn't mean Jenna Ortega is turning off her gothic style. The 21-year-old actress kicked off the press tour for her upcoming movie, "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," in Mexico City on Tuesday wearing a stunning tulle dress.
The nude-coloured Vivienne Westwood piece featured a draped neckline, off-the-shoulder straps and an asymmetrical skirt donning a black swirly design. The "Scream" star wore black platform heels, some rings and red nails, as she pulled her black locks into a ponytail.
WORST DRESSED: Sofia Vergara
Sofia Vergara looks incredible in pretty much any outfit, but that doesn't mean the look she wore for the "America's Got Talent" Season 19 red carpet on Tuesday was the right choice. The 52-year-old actress look stunning neck up, showing off her immaculately straight sleek hair and a modest glam make-up look. But everything else the "Modern Family" star wore was simply unflattering.
While her wide-legged silver trousers could be cute, it's the rhinestone-lace-sequin (yes, you read that correctly) silver corset she wore as a top that made all her style vanish.
BEST DRESSED: Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu
Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu certainly knows how to serve a look at an event. The "Emily in Paris" star wowed everyone at the Netflix series' pink carpet on Wednesday in Los Angeles, wearing a Schiaparelli couture gown that looked effortlessly glamorous. The 61-year-old actress's black dress featured sequins and tassels on a skirt that protruded at the hips, subtly highlighting an architectural design the French fashion house is known for.
WORST DRESSED: Saoirse Ronan
Saoirse Ronan might be something of a movie star, but she looked a bit too much like a Sim at the premiere of her latest film, "The Outrun," at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on Thursday. The 30-year-old actress wore a shiny silver mock neck mini dress featuring black sides that made the Irish star appear rectangular.
She paired the number with black sandals, silver jewelry and a chic bob, while also showing off her new wedding ring. Ronan's appearance this week was the first time she's been seen since secretly marrying her "Mary Queen of Scots" co-star, Jack Lowden, in Scotland.
BEST DRESSED: Cailee Spaeny
If there's something fashion lovers should take note of, it's a celebrity who takes style risks — and executes them well. Cailee Spaeny stunned in a black Mugler gown featuring feathers and see-through fabric for the London premiere of "Alien: Romulus." The edgy, futuristic look is full-on chic and befitting for the sci-fi/horror movie. The 26-year-old actress paired the look with open-toe black heels, silver earrings and a sleek bun.
WORST DRESSED: Halle Berry
Lingerie should never be featured on a red carpet, but Halle Berry seems to think otherwise. The 58-year-old actress wore a black long-sleeve bodysuit featuring a plunging V-neck for the Los Angeles premiere of her movie, "The Union." The La Perla piece was made of sheer and lace panels, and was complete with a lace skirt.
But at 58, Berry has never looked better. The lingerie look might be an odd choice for such a high-profile event, but neck up, the actress showed off a glamorous make-up look and a stunning wavy bob.
BEST DRESSED: Isabela Merced
It's exciting to see celebrity fashion risk takers who are so early in their career, and Isabela Merced looking stunning in the black Giambattista Valli gown she wore for the Los Angeles premiere of "Alien: Romulus" on Monday. The 23-year-old actress shined in the dark dress, which featured triangular protruding hips, a wrap-around bodice and a hood.
WORST DRESSED: Elizabeth Banks
For the "Skincare" premiere in New York on Tuesday, Elizabeth Banks decided to blend both of the fashion trends we've seen on celebrities this week. The 50-year-old actress paired a black blazer coat with a silver dress made of various sized sequins. To add a bit of drama, she wore dark tights and black stilettos, but the whole look was just a bit too confusing to look good.
