A family-owned pie shop that’s been open 10 years named best in the Charlotte area

Flaky crust and sweet fillings come together as pie to make a dessert worthy of any table. But which restaurant, bakery or pie shop in the Charlotte area has the best pie of all?

Our CharlotteFive Readers’ Choice Best Pie poll has answered the question. We asked for your favorite places to get pie, then compiled the list of suggestions to create the poll where you voted for the best.

Each of the finalists have each been baking pies for more than a decade, seeing orders pour in year after year for special occasions, holidays and everyday desserts all year round. At each place, you can take pie-making classes, as well.

After five rounds of voting, here’s the shop with the best pie in the Charlotte area, according to you.

THE BEST PIE IN THE CHARLOTTE AREA:

Carolina Pie Company

Location: 136 Stutts Rd, Mooresville, NC 28117

Owner Steve Lindberg is following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps at Carolina Pie Company, which has been open in Mooresville about 10 years now.

“I didn’t start out with pie, or as a baker, but I grew up in bakeries,” Lindberg told CharlotteFive. “The objective when we started this was to say, OK, I know what I want the end product to look like. Let’s get there.”

With his wife — whom he calls “an excellent baker” — and daughter by his side, they are cranking out all kinds of pies. Among the lineup of sweet selections are Bourbon Pecan, Wild Maine Blueberry and their top-selling Bumbleberry Pie, made with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. (Gluten free, low sugar and vegan options are available.)

At Carolina Pie Company, the crust is just as important as the filling, so those who generally eat the filling and leave the crust behind are in for a treat.

“You’re not going to do that to my pie,” he said, noting they’ve spent a good bit of time developing their crust recipe. “We’re pretty proud of that.”

Lindberg’s daughter, Melanie Barker, described Carolina Pie Company as “just a fun place to be.”

“All of our customers are so happy and glad and excited to eat pie,” she said.

FINALIST FOR BEST PIE IN THE CHARLOTTE AREA:

Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen

Location: 4001 Yancey Rd, Charlotte, NC 28217

Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen — opened by chef Alyssa Wilen and her husband, Andrew — has been teaching classes and baking up pies for about 12 years.

“They’re always changing depending on what I’m inspired by and just what I’m kind of using throughout the season,” Wilen told CharlotteFive.

Chef Alyssa’s blends together Wilen’s expertise in the kitchen with her husband’s expertise in event planning and marketing to create hands-on culinary activities for guests, along with catering and family meals for takeout and delivery.

Chef Alyssa’s Thanksgiving to-go pies have been a fixture of its holiday menu for the past seven years. For four of those, executive pastry chef Brittany Nolen has been baking in addition to teaching classes. This year’s pie selection is a spiced apple pie with bourbon caramel, which you can upgrade with an add-on of vanilla ice cream.

“Thank you to everybody for coming out and supporting Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen for the past 12 years. We’ve grown because of you, and we want to continue to serve the community,” Wilen said.
