Shopping for work-appropriate fall boots is tougher than it seems—especially if you’re looking for high-quality leather that doesn’t break the bank.

So when Everlane released their latest Editor Boot, the Yahoo Lifestyle Canada editors knew we had to try them.

The Editor Boot, which comes in black leather, bone leather and chocolate suede, is handcrafted from 100 per cent leather and features a sleek silhouette that theoretically should go with just about everything. The boot has a pointed toe, an undaunting kitten heel and a side zipper that makes for easy wear.

At $278 CAD, they’re not cheap (even though Everlane estimates their “traditional retail” at $574)—so we had our four editors put them to the test to see if they’re worth the price.

While taller heels naturally make me feel the most feminine, there’s nothing more empowering than the light, yet obvious, click-clacking of kitten heels hitting the floor as I make my down a subway platform — So yeah, I guess you can say I’m a fan of a short, skinny-heeled boot. Opting for half a size up (5.5), as the website suggests, in the Everlane’s Editor Boot in Bone, I was pleasantly surprised with roomy the fit. It wasn’t too big or too narrow. Unlike the three lookalike pairs I have at home, I was able to comfortably walk and last in them for hours, which is very rare for me in point-toe shoes (hence why I have three pairs of white point-toe kitten heels). As someone who stands a little under 5”, I love how a point-toe shoe instantly elongates my figure without compromising an un-walkable heel height.

The Editor Boot in Chocolate Suede

I’ve been on a major suede kick this season, having already bought one pair of tall boots just a couple of weeks ago, so when I saw that the Editor Boot came in a chocolate brown suede I knew I had to have them. When they showed up at my desk, I wasn’t sure what to expect since I’ve never worn Everlane shoes before, and I ordered my usual 8.5 even though the website suggested going up a half size. I’m glad I stuck with my gut because the boots fit perfectly, but I do have a narrower foot. If you need the extra width though, I can understand how a larger size may work better and provide a more comfortable fit.

After trying on my new boots, I ended up keeping them on for the rest of the afternoon and on my commute home, and was honestly shocked by how comfortable they were. I’m used to a break-in period with new shoes (especially leather ones) and was so impressed that there were no fit issues from the get-go. My only complaint is that the boots were a little squeaky walking around the office, but for the comfort and versatility of the Editor Boot, I’m willing to overlook a bit of noise.

As an Everlane neophyte, I was excited to try out these booties as an alternative to my go-to Chelsea boots for fall. I don’t usually opt for kitten heeled, but I think they add instant polish to the Editor Boot without compromising the comfort of a flat or my beloved Chelseas. Easy to walk in, I can definitely see myself dressing these up or down and wearing outside of the office this fall, winter and even into spring.

While the price is typically a little higher than I would have liked, I think that the Editor Boots are classic enough to be worn for multiple seasons if you take care of them. The leather is very soft; I’ve had ankle boots in the past that have been similar and have ripped or torn, which makes me curious to see how the leather and heel hold up over time The one thing I would recommend to anyone is to wear a thin sock liner, since the leather can definitely cause feet to sweat!

Of all the lifestyle editors, I might have been the most wary of these boots. I’m not a fan of kitten heels at all (I prefer a block heel, which is why Everlane’s Boss Boot has been a favourite for nearly two years), and I also find that ankle boots can cut me at a very awkward height. If I’m being completely honest, I thought I’d unpack these shoes, wear them once, and relegate them to the pile of unwanted PR drops our team has piled around our desks. However, when I pulled these out of the box, I knew I was wrong. I took my usual Everlane size (I’m a 7.5 in Everlane and pretty consistently a 7 in just about every other brand—I find that Everlane typically runs a bit narrow) and they fit like a glove.

I love the soft, supple leather that almost molds to your foot (in the best way possible). The leather zipper pull is a nice change of pace from the toughened up all-metal zipper pull and exposed zipper on the Boss Boot, and the leather is top-notch quality. The pointy toe box also instantly elongated my silhouette, even when I was just trying them on in the office with jeans and a sweater.

I think that’s what I like most about these—they legitimately look as good with a pair of jeans and an oversized sweater as they do with a flowing dress.

Best of all? These are so comfortable, as evidenced by our team Slack channel above. These boots feel like you’re wearing flats, but have the added class of a slight heel. I walked the nearly three kilometres to work the day after we received these, and had no pain at all.
