In case you haven’t already gotten the memo, skinny jeans are put on slight pause this fall to make way for pant trends from decades past. Along with super high-waisted mom jeans, corduroys, elevated cargos and pleather pants, one trend that is naturally cueing nostalgia is wide-leg jeans.

Falling somewhere between flare and straight, this trends combines qualities of both cuts that make it ideal for endless style possibilities. And because we love putting a trend on trial here at Yahoo Canada, here, in the first instalment of our new video series #EditorsStyle, we put Frank and Oak’s best-selling The Nina Wide-Leg Jean ($90-100) to the test by creating four versatile looks: Casual chic, Date Night, 9 to 5 and Athleisure.

Transparently described as non-stretch denim ( a huge red flag), these high-rise jeans are also said to sit true at the waist and feature raw edge hems. So, is it style over fit for the case of these jeans? Here are our thoughts.

‘Totally flattering’

“I was skeptical of how the wide leg jeans would fit at first - but was pleasantly surprised that they not only seemed to fit like a glove (I sized up one size from my usual denim), but were totally flattering. Plus, the cropped cut was perfect for wearing with flats or boots. While I loved the heavy denim (pantylines are my enemy), I did find that the front tended to bunch up a bit and make me feel frumpy. I thought the darker colours, which my coworkers tried out, were a bit more flattering.” —Hilary, Managing Editor

‘I’m a convert’

“As someone who usually only wears skinny jeans, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed wearing a wide leg jean. Even though I have bigger hips, the jeans were very flattering, and I didn't feel as though I got lost in the jeans. They were easy to dress up and super stylish. I'm a convert.” - Elizabeth, Editor

‘Won me over’

“I’m a huge fan of wide-legged jeans, but I’m only 5’3” so I usually go for a cropped length to avoid having to hem or alter any new pairs I may buy. When I first saw the Nina Long jeans, I was a little worried that I’d have to ditch my no-alterations rule, but was shocked to find that they just skimmed the bottoms of my shoes without dragging or pooling, even when I only had sneakers on. Their high rise and classic indigo wash won me over, and the only thing missing before I could declare them the perfect pair of wide-legged jeans is a hint of stretch for extra comfort.” Kate, Associate Editor

‘Lack of stretch’

“If you know me, you know I've been over skinny jeans for a while now — I love how wide-leg jeans magically elevate any look. But as much as I want to love this particular pair, I don't think I'll ever get over its lack of stretch, which is too bad because this particular grey is the perfect wash for fall.” —Alyssa, Associate Editor
