Duke and Duchess of Sussex have ‘bought a property in Portugal’
The wealthy and well-connected of Portugal’s west coast are thought to be welcoming new neighbours.
Prince Harry and Meghan have reportedly bought a property in the CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club on the idyllic Melides coastline. Just over an hour away from Portugal’s capital, Lisbon, Melides has long been a sought-after destination for the well-heeled looking for privacy. Indeed, the 300-property CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club is thought to offer discretion in spades.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will also be joining other members of the royal family. Princess Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, moved to the CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club in 2022, with their young sons August, three and one-year-old Ernest. They now split their time between Portugal and Kensington Palace. According to The Times, Hugh van Cutsem, a family friend to the royals, is also a regular visitor along with his wife, Rose, and their family.
It’s thought that Harry and Meghan visited Eugenie and her husband in Portugal shortly after a trip to Germany, which hosted the Invictus Games.
Melides is not just popular with the British upper-crust; fashion darlings and Hollywood A-listers have also bought property there. Christian Louboutin has a home and boutique hotel on the coastline, while Nicole Kidman and Scarlett Johansson are also said to have houses in the area.
Currently, Harry and Meghan live in a 16-bedroom property in Montecito, California. They moved to the $21 million mansion (around £16 million) in 2020 after stepping down as senior working members of the royal family. It makes sense that they might be looking for a European base, given that much of their work involves travelling to the continent.
The couple previously lived in Frogmore Cottage, a grade-II listed property in Windsor, when they resided in the UK. They vacated the property in summer 2023.
