For Chicago-based creative director and abstract artist, Briana McNamara, this rental loft apartment in a 1920s factory in Wicker Park was a perfect fit for her artistic vision. “The space is full of character — exposed brick, towering ceilings, and original wood beams — which adds its own story to the decor,” she writes of the home she’s been renting with her boyfriend, Sean, for one year.
Unfortunately as a rental, Briana and Sean were faced with the challenge of restrictions on what they were able to do with paint and remodeling, but that was just a puzzle to solve. “I’ve embraced creative, nonpermanent solutions, like playing with textures, statement pieces, and utilizing the built-in shelving to craft a homey atmosphere without altering the architecture,” Briana describes. “After years in high-rise apartments, we were excited to transition into this loft, drawn to its rich history and character, which gave me the perfect canvas to express my design sensibilities.”
