8 celebrities who have opened up about having miscarriages: Meghan Markle, Gwyneth Paltrow & more
Losing a child is one of life’s most painful moments for prospective parents, families and friends. But opening up about miscarriage can help others going through a miscarriage feel less alone.
According to Mayo Clinic, between 10 and 20 per cent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, yet it's not a topic often discussed.
However, many celebrities have been open about their journeys with miscarriages. Scroll below to see what 8 celebrities have said about their miscarriage experience.
1. Beyoncé
Beyoncé Knowles-Carter has typically been private about personal affairs, but the artist opened up about suffering multiple miscarriages before giving birth to her three children, Blue Ivy, Rumi and Sir.
The "Crazy in Love" and "Single Ladies" singer shared that she was able to learn lessons from the pain and loss. She told Elle in 2019 that "having miscarriages taught me that I had to mother myself before I could be a mother to someone else."
2. Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex
The Duchess of Sussex has opened up publicly about her miscarriage, along with the stigma and silence around women's health issues.
She described the "almost unbearable grief" of losing a child in an essay published in the New York Times in 2020. The former actress said, "Some have bravely shared their stories; They have opened the door, knowing that when one person speaks truth, it gives license for all of us to do the same."
3. Alanis Morissette
In 2020, Canadian singer Alanis Morissette shared her journey with pregnancies and miscarriages on Dax Shepard's podcast, "Armchair Expert." Morissette revealed that in between the births of her three children, Winter Mercy, Ever Imre and Onyx Solace, she had "a bunch of miscarriages."
Despite the challenges, the "You Oughta Know" singer always tried to focus on a positive future. "I'm an optimist who will get depressed and cry," she said. "But at the end of the day, there's still that little light, that little star of Bethlehem keeps dangling over there."
4. Michelle Obama
In her 2018 memoir, "Becoming," Michelle Obama disclosed her own heartbreaking story of miscarriage and fertility issues with former U.S. President Barack Obama. The former first lady described how the experience is "lonely, painful and demoralizing," adding that although common, it is deeply misunderstood.
"We had one pregnancy test come back positive, which caused us both to forget every worry and swoon with joy," she said. "But a couple of weeks later, I had a miscarriage, which left me physically uncomfortable and cratered any optimism we felt."
5. Gwyneth Paltrow
Actress Gwyneth Paltrow disclosed to the Daily Mail in 2013 that she had suffered a miscarriage during her third pregnancy.
The "Iron Man" star said she "had a really bad experience when I was pregnant with my third. It didn't work out, and I nearly died."
6. Savannah Guthrie
In an interview with Good Housekeeping in 2022, Today co-host Savannah Guthrie discussed the miscarriage she experienced at 40-years-old. She suffered the loss after the birth of her daughter, Vale and after going through two rounds of in vitro fertilization treatment.
She highlighted how her experience left her feeling hopeless about ever having another baby. "I stopped even letting myself hope or believe I could [get pregnant] because the years were getting on," she told the magazine. "It wasn't that I thought it was impossible; I just thought it wasn't likely."
7. Christina Perri
"Human" and "Jar of Hearts" singer Christina Perri has publicly spoken about her heart-wrenching story of a stillbirth in 2020, and a miscarriage just ten months prior. She described the continued grief after giving birth to stillborn Rosie, saying, "There was so much anger and pain and sadness. ... I don't know if Paul or I will ever not feel that longing for Rosie, but she will always be in my heart."
However, Perri recently announced that her current four-year-old daughter, Carmella, will soon have a little sister.
8. Lily Allen
British artist Lily Allen publicly talked about her miscarriage back in 2008 with the Telegraph, as well as the stillbirth of her son in 2010, according to the Daily Mail, while she was six months pregnant. The "Smile" and "Not Fair" singer disclosed how the pain is not something that will ever go away.
"It's something that I still haven't dealt with," she explained. "I never will get over it. I have dealt with it, you know, as being at one with it. But it's not something that you get over. I held my child and it was really horrific and painful — one of the hardest things that can happen to a person."
