Carrots Are Being Recalled Across 18 States (So Far) After One Death
It’s essential for shoppers to stay updated on recall alerts. Just a few weeks ago people had to check their freezers and toss out potentially contaminated waffles. Now, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that people should discard their carrots too.
Here’s what we know: On November 16, 2024, Grimmway Farms — a large grower, producer, and shipper of carrots — voluntarily recalled organic whole carrots and organic baby carrots because of a potential E. coli contamination.
The company announced the voluntary recall of these carrots after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that these vegetables may be associated with an ongoing outbreak. The alert includes organic whole and baby carrots distributed to popular grocery stores like Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, and more. There were no best-if-used-by-dates on the bags of organic whole carrots, but to learn more about the specific expiration dates on the baby carrots and brands involved, review the FDA’s recall statement.
The FDA has released reports that this carrot-related E. coli O121:H19 outbreak has caused 39 illnesses and one death. As a result, the implicated farms that may have spread this bacteria have stopped all production.
If you think you may have accidentally eaten these potentially tainted carrots in a salad or a soup, the CDC recommends looking out for the following symptoms: diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting, a fever higher than 102°F, and dehydration. If you are experiencing any of these potential E. coli side effects, contact your doctor immediately.
