Bill Murray’s Former ‘Hollywood on the Hudson’ Home in New York Lists for $3.7 Million
Bill Murray’s former New York home, located in the celebrity-loved enclave of Snedens Landing, recently listed for just under $3.7 million.
Snedens Landing, a tiny riverside enclave in the hamlet of Palisades, New York, has long drawn A-listers, artists, and other high-profile individuals for its low-key lifestyle, acreage, and nature. In fact, it is often referred to as “Hollywood on the Hudson.” Past and present residents of Snedens Landing include Uma Thurman, Ethan Hawke, Angelina Jolie, Al Pacino, and Scarlett Johanssen, to name a few. Located along the Hudson River, Snedens Landing is both rural and discreet, with just 100 residences within the area. Unlike other Hudson Valley properties located more than 90 minutes from New York, Palisades is easily accessible just 25 miles outside of New York City. Private wooded landscaping, large properties, and secluded homes make this a go-to destination for homeowners seeking a primary home or vacation residence.

That’s likely what actor Murray, of Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day fame, thought when he bought the property with his then-wife Margaret Kelly in 1986. He bought the home, which included a 19th-century barn known as the “Yellow Barn,” and built upon the home. Murray hasn’t owned the home since the 1990s, and the current sellers are acclaimed artists Sean Scully and Liliane Tomasko. The couple bought the home in 2012 for $2.55 million.
The prolific actor and comedian tapped notable Connecticut-based architecture firm Shope Reno Wharton, a residential and commercial design firm known for designing livable, enduring, and site-specific homes. The firm also excels in skillfully connecting historic homes with the present, which is exactly what they were tasked to do with the “Yellow Barn.” Murray enlisted the firm to expand the existing structure and craft a freestanding two-car garage with an office/studio space. While not all of the original structure could be salvaged, Shope Reno Wharton incorporated many elements of the original structure into the Yellow Barn’s design.
Though it was built more than three decades ago, the Yellow Barn retains its age-old charm. Situated on nearly four acres, the home spans 5,177 square feet and has five bedrooms, four bathrooms, and one powder room. There’s also a screened-in porch and family room.
The Colonial-style home, listed by Marjorie Galen of Sotheby’s International Realty, is painted an unmistakable bright yellow hue—as expected by its name—as an homage to the original Yellow Barn. Wild landscaping surrounds the house, and inside there are beautiful light-filled living spaces with classical interior design, including a modern living room with vaulted ceilings and skylights. French doors connect you to the backyard, which has ample lawn space and mature trees.
The home is as cozy as it gets, with wood-burning fireplaces in the living room and dining room, a formal dining area with a bookshelf and oversized windows, and an office nook with a built-in daybed. There’s a quaint kitchen, designed for a no-frills chef, that has been recently updated with new appliances. Windows over the sink flood the room with natural sunlight and the kitchen island has eat-in seating for informal weekend breakfast. The home’s only original 19th-century fireplace is located in the kitchen.
Upstairs, you’ll find the spacious primary suite, which has a vaulted ceiling and blue walls, and other ensuite bedrooms, one of which is currently used as a gym. The home reflects a vintage style but is primed for a buyer with a creative design vision. The sale comes with an additional two-acre buildable parcel, should you want to create an artist’s studio or guest cottage.
