Canadian influencer on 'working mom' title: 'My husband isn't called a working dad'

Ariana Christie is redefining what it means to be a mom with a career.

On Wednesday, the Canadian influencer shared a compelling message on Instagram that challenges the traditional concept of a "working mom," alongside a photo of herself sitting in a chair wearing a beige linen pantsuit and stylish black chunky heel loafers.

In her caption, the mom-of-three reflected on the broader roles that women fulfill in their lives and the double standards between mothers and fathers.

"Working mom. What does that even mean? I work, and I'm a mom, but I also do many other things and we don't combine all of those titles," she questioned. "It had me thinking, my husband isn't called a working dad, and no one calls me a working wife, so why this title of 'working mom'?"

Christie explained that she wants to break free from limited and gender-specific labels to set an example for her children and embrace the multifaceted nature of her identity.

"My career, my relationships with them, my relationship with my husband, my friendships, volunteerism, soccer player, guitar player, knitting, creative, baker, chef," she continued, listing other parts of her identity before pointing out that her husband's individuality is never reduced to just fatherhood.

"Most times I walk into our office, I'm asked, 'Where are the kids, who are they with?' And I know that my husband is never asked that question when he goes to work," she penned.

Christie's message was quickly met with applause and gratitude from fans in the comments section.

"Wow, thank you so much for sharing this. It's really not talked about enough; the expectations placed on mothers vs. fathers," a fan weighed in. "The bar is very low for being a dad, and they get to keep their identities. While moms are expected to sacrifice their bodies and then their identities. SMH."

"The age-old double standard," someone pointed out.

"One hundred per cent. Thank you for sharing as this is something we should be talking more about," an Instagram user penned.

Earlier this month, the Guelph, Ont.-realtor shared an intimate Instagram Reel containing footage of her breastfeeding journey paired with a "powerful" message about embracing "providing."

In the clip, Christie shared several photos of herself tandem breastfeeding her now-two-year-old twin sons, Oscar and Axel, when they were younger, as well as feeding her 8-month-old daughter, Cali.

"It is multitasking and adapting. It's pain and exhaustion and feeling accomplished. It's giving hours and hours one end and feeling touched out," she captioned the post. "It's beautiful still moments and knowing that you're providing.

"It's Breastfeeding Awareness Week, which can bring up a lot of feelings for many. So this week, remember that everyone's journey is different."
