Allison Lang opens up about breaking the 'perception' people with disabilities don't travel
The disability advocate said she's had people make back-handed comments about her ability to do things.
Allison Lang wants people to know having a disability doesn't mean she can't travel.
The Canadian amputee — who was born without the lower half of her left leg — took to Instagram Thursday to share her love for travelling. Lang posted a reel of herself on Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, sporting a floral red midi dress and black combat boots.
She penned a caption saying she wants to "break the perception that if someone has a disability that they don’t leave the house, that they don’t like exploring new places."
Lang said the perception couldn't be further from the truth.
Lang's post comes as July marks Disability Pride Month.
The body confidence advocate said she's had people make back-handed comments about her ability to do things.
'I’ve been asked or had comments made to me like: 'wow, I can’t even do that,' 'I’m impressed you walked that whole way,' 'Is that even safe for you to do?,' 'OMG don’t hurt yourself, you shouldn’t be putting your body through all that,'" Lang wrote.
"All these comments make me feel like because I have one leg that I’m not expected to be able to do these things."
She continued to say these comments might stem from the inaccessibility of some spaces, but that the comments wouldn’t be made if she had two legs.
"I will continue showing up and sharing my adventures until it is normalized," Lang claimed. "Repeat after me: disabled people love to travel and explore too."
The post comes after Lang shared a carousel of NYC snaps, wearing jean shorts with a white button-down and high-top converse.
The Montreal-based influencer said she walked a 1.45-mile green walkway in the city, followed by a visit to Chelsea Market and Broadway.
She teased her followers her travel plans don't end there, as she's set to head to Europe.
"Stay tuned for European Lang Gang content coming your way soon," she wrote.
