4 ‘most remote’ pubs in the UK revealed

The most ‘remote pubs’ in the UK have been named – with some so off-the-beaten track that visitors need to take a ferry and plan around the tide times to access them.

To come up with the list, the team at Dojo looked at whether the pubs are accessible by car, foot or ferry and how far they were from the closest city.

The four off-grid spots on the list are scattered across the country, with one found on Scotland’s Inner Hebrides and another in a small village near Exeter.

The Puffer Bar on Scotland’s Easdale Island takes the top spot as the most remote, being only accessible by ferry and 115 miles from Glasgow.

Easdale Island is the smallest inhabited island off Scotland’s west coast, with a population of only 60 people. What’s more, there is no vehicular access to the island, so those looking to visit the pub will need to take a small 10-passenger ferry, and get the service back to the mainland before 11pm.

The Ship Inn, located on an island off the northeast coast of England, comes in second place and has a rather unique USP... the fact it’s only accessible at low tides.

Found on Holy Island, and 71 miles away from Edinburgh, this institution serves food and drink but also offers overnight stays to guests. However, visitors are urged to be mindful of the weather when planning a visit – particularly during periods of high winds.

A different public house with the same name takes third position, located on Piel Island – just 26 acres in size – in Barrow-in-Furness.

Ship Inn can only be accessed by ferry and is worth the trip it seems, with online reviews describing it as a ‘fantastic experience’. The island does offer camping facilities, so visitors can stay the night if they wish.

The Turf Hotel came fourth on the list and is one of the few pubs in the country that can’t be reached by car.

Despite being just 5 miles away from Exeter, this spot prides itself on being a 'destination pub' that’s only accessible by foot or ferry. With the nearest car park being a mile away, visitors can instead opt for a private boat or ferry, which departs from the east shore town of Topsham.
