Just as we were starting to get excited about seasonal recipes like hearty soups and delicious chilis, a nationwide meat recall has everyone wondering if embracing more veggies may be the way to go this season.

In a rather large and expansive nationwide recall, nearly 10 million pounds have been recalled due to listeria concerns. This recall impacts BrucePac, an Oklahoma-based distributor of ready-to-eat chicken and other meat products. The chicken products being recalled were produced from June 19, 2024, through October 8, 2024, and will be marked with establishment numbers “51205 or P-51205” inside or under the USDA inspection label.

To get an idea of products you may own that may be impacted, BrucePac lists their various ready-to-eat products on its website. As it wasn’t made clear which specific products were included in this risk, other than it being ready-to-eat chicken, it’s fair to assume this may include products such as rotisserie chickens or chicken cold cuts.

While no illnesses related to listeria have been reported as of yet,  the FDA did report that some produced by BrucePac did test positive for listeria, and this is a serious illness that can take several weeks to show symptoms, and while mild cases will appear flu-like, more severe infections can be life-threatening.

At a time when everything from Boar’s Head deli meats to everyday eggs are being recalled, it feels like all of our favorite recipes are increasingly unsafe, but all we can really do is be vigilant and pay attention to recalls such as these if we think anything in our fridge or pantry may have been impacted.

Maybe it’s a good time to start researching recipes for delicious seasonal salads involving fresh veggies, such as this beautiful Brussels sprouts Caesar salad that will be perfect for fall dinners.
