‘Shedeur to the Dolphins.’ Deion Sanders insinuates that the Dolphins should draft his son

At least one hall of famer has his eyes on the Miami Dolphins quarterback situation.

During a recent episode of “Nightcap,” Colorado coach Deion Sanders insinuated that the Dolphins should draft his son, Shedeur, if Tua Tagovailoa sustains another concussion.

“What do you do businesswise if you’re the Dolphins?” Sanders told co-hosts Shannon Sharpe and Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson. “Do you take a quarterback, which is what I’m saying, or do you say ‘Tua, let’s check this out, let’s see what we’re going to do.’ Is his health more important than that?”

It took a second or two for Johnson to understand where Sanders was going. When it finally clicked, the All-Pro receiver said the quiet part out loud.

“Let’s say because of the Tua injury and things don’t work out and it leaves an open and they make a business decision and go into the draft and boom: Shedeur to the Dolphins,” Johnson said.

“So you just got the revelation huh?” Sanders quipped.

“That’s why he brought it up, Ocho!” Sharpe exclaimed.

At 1-3, the Dolphins are on track to have the second pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, according to website that tracks draft order. While they likely wouldn’t select a quarterback after signing Tagovailoa to a four-year, $212 million extension, everything could change if the former Alabama quarterback suffers another concussion.

Sanders hasn’t been shy about his intention to influence where Shedeur lands, something that players from John Elway to Eli Manning have actually done. He even specifically joked about pulling a Manning, who famously refused to go to the San Diego Chargers, the team that selected him No. 1 overall during the 2004 NFL Draft, and essentially forced a trade to the New York Giants.

“I want what’s best for him,” Deion said during that same “Nightcap” episode. “I want him to be happy as well. You really don’t get to dictate where your son gets to go because there’s a draft process, but you know us. You know how we are, we know who ain’t trying to win in the NFL. You know who’s consistently in the basement year after year after year. You don’t want that situation for your kid or your family members. Nobody, none of them. So we know what time it is.”

It makes sense why Deion would want Shedeur in the aqua and orange. The Dolphins have quite the attractive roster with dual receiving threats in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle as well as an emerging running back in De’Von Achane.

Shedeur, on the other hand, is one of the top prospects of the draft. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. even recently called the Colorado signal caller the No. 1 quarterback. Through five games, Shedeur has completed roughly 70% of his passes and thrown 14 touchdowns to just three interceptions. His 1,630 yards passing yards also rank sixth in the nation.

“Shedeur Sanders has had to survive,” Kiper said. “I don’t know any other quarterback that could, and still be out there... to keep getting back up and competing. I’m ready to put Shedeur at QB1, I really am, just because of that reason.”
