Ranking all 32 current NHL home jerseys, from worst to best: 2024-25 edition
Nothing gets hockey fans more ready for an argument than jersey designs. Hockey jerseys are a special symbol for the sport, as players who put on a team's sweater become part of something bigger than themselves. Players take pride in wearing their team's crest and colors as they play their hearts out for their city and their teammates.
Hockey fans, on the other hand, love to talk jersey aesthetics. Any time a new hockey jersey is released, fans will go over them with a fine-tooth comb to find any imperfections they deem unacceptable to the sport. Seriously, any slight change to an iconic look is critiqued and argued about to no end.
And the 2024-25 season's slate of jerseys is under even more scrutiny due to Fanatics replacing Adidas as the league’s on-ice jersey outfitter. Thankfully, it seems like the NHL has avoided the pitfalls that befell baseball in the spring with their see-through pants from Fanatics, though time will tell if this newest iteration of jerseys has their own problems.
However, without further ado, here are all 32 current NHL home jerseys for the 2024-25 season, ranked from worst to first.
32. Chicago Blackhawks
The Blackhawks' name and logo have remained unchanged despite pleas for their removal due to the harmful effects of Native American appropriation. It’s past time for Chicago to change course but until they do, they sit last in our rankings.
31. Utah Hockey Club
These are placeholder jerseys until Utah reveals its final team name and branding before next season. The colors are nice, I suppose -- except black as a base, really? -- but they look like a custom jersey made in NHL 25. Hopefully their jersey next year sticks the landing better.
30. Florida Panthers
The Panthers have a pleasing color scheme, but look too much like a modern soccer kit rather than a hockey sweater. I had hoped for a redesign, but considering Florida just won the Stanley Cup with these jerseys, they're probably going to stay.
29. Columbus Blue Jackets
Nods to Ohio's flag aside, the Blue Jackets’ logo and jersey leave a lot to be desired. The team has been using this jersey concept since the mid-2000s and it feels ripe for a refresh to bring it into the modern era.
28. Nashville Predators
Yellow is a very overpowering color and the Predators just have way too much of it. Adding additional navy blue or white to offset their bold yellow would make this a more palatable jersey for sure.
27. Washington Capitals
The Capitals’ logo has worn out its welcome, as the team should move to their secondary logo featured on their shoulder full time. Also, the 50th anniversary patch is so silly looking.
26. Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks just don’t have a lot going for them. The jersey is fine and the logo is nice, as always, but Vancouver has kept this look around for some time now. It feels like it might be time to switch things up a bit.
25. Colorado Avalanche
The Avalanche have one of the NHL’s more unique color schemes -- which is great -- but the blue pants blend right in with their jerseys and ruin it. Colorado has something here with these jerseys, but swung too far in one direction and upset the balance.
24. Tampa Bay Lightning
Big points are knocked off the Lightning here for essentially being a copy of the Maple Leafs’ iconic jerseys. When your team is named after a powerful force of nature, it feels like there was a missed opportunity to go bigger here.
23. Vegas Golden Knights
The Golden Knights really need to move back to their gray home jerseys. Their gold jerseys are just too much to look at and their logo completely disappears in all the mess. Bring back the gray!
22. Ottawa Senators
The Senators' old logo really has done them wonders, but these jerseys could still use a few touchups. Adding a bit of white — or even a hint of gold — to this jersey would really make them shine.
21. Carolina Hurricanes
Carolina really had something going with their home red jerseys, but have since swapped them out for these black ones with their hurricane warning logo. It’d be nice to see a return to their classic red sweaters because these ones just aren't as good as what they had before.
20. Winnipeg Jets
It’s a shame the Jets won’t fully commit to using their old logo — even though it’s not the same Jets team — because their slate has gotten stale in recent years. The color scheme is nice, but it’s utilized in a basic way that is outclassed by other jerseys.
19. Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers' deeper orange suits them well -- as do their jerseys modeled after 1980s and 1990s teams -- but the solid color numbers make the sweaters look unfinished in an unfortunate way.
18. Dallas Stars
The Stars really rock this shade of green, but it’d be great to see the jersey get a bit of a face lift to make them even better. I'm not a fan of the white collar and it can definitely be modernized to fit with the Stars' unique sweaters going forward.
17. New York Islanders
The Islanders haven’t messed around much with these and for good reason. The big stripes of white and orange at the bottom and on the sleeves help balance out the deep blue quite nicely. Who knows how long this jersey will hold out before it starts to get stale, but it’s very solid all the same.
16. Minnesota Wild
I do like the Wild's home jersey, but it's beginning to wear thin with me. The cream-colored stripes with a touch of red balance out the forest green really nicely without looking too much like Christmas. Still, fans are clearly clamoring for something new in the State of Hockey.
15. Los Angeles Kings
Sure, black, white and silver are a very basic color combination, but the return of the Kings' old logo from Wayne Gretzky's era elevates these tremendously. This logo should have never left Los Angeles!
14. San Jose Sharks
Teal is a great color and the Sharks wear it well. My only complaint? These jerseys could have a dash more orange to make it really pop off the ice.
13. New Jersey Devils
The Devils have one of the best logos in the sport and it sits at the forefront with their jersey. A little on the basic side, but given how sharp New Jersey's crest is, we’ll let it slide because the whole package is just that good.
12. Seattle Kraken
While Seattle’s home jerseys aren’t as good as their gorgeous away ones, the Kraken really made a statement with these and haven't deviated from them since their inaugural season. The Kraken really hit it out of the park with their branding on the first try.
11. Calgary Flames
The bold lines and bright colors of the Flames jerseys might not work for every team, but Calgary takes it to a new level with these blazing sweaters worthy of their name.
10. St. Louis Blues
The Blues have worn this jersey for some time now and it's still a beauty to behold. A very simple jersey, but an effective one all the same with a color scheme that is easy on the eyes.
9. Anaheim Ducks
The Mighty Ducks logo makes its triumphant return! I do wish Anaheim's iconic purple and green color scheme came along with it instead of the bright orange, but it's hard to complain about the return of one of the best logos in sports.
8. Edmonton Oilers
In 2022, the Oilers went back to their primary blue sweaters at home and we’re all better off for it. The Oilers current home jerseys are a gorgeous mix of blue, orange and white, with a pattern that harkens back to their roots. Never change from these again, Edmonton.
7. Buffalo Sabres
Back in 2021, the Sabres returned to their original royal blue, giving the team a much-needed facelift for their jerseys. The yellow and white give the jersey some pop while the Sabres’ top-tier logo remains the focus in the center.
6. Detroit Red Wings
One of the NHL’s classics, without a doubt. The Red Wings got it right on the first try and have never had to change it since. That, right there, is how you know a jersey is good.
5. Boston Bruins
The Bruins' awful 100th anniversary jerseys have been retired and the team is back to their classic black, yellow and white look. Just an all-time great hockey sweater.
4. Toronto Maple Leafs
The Maple Leafs jerseys were always great, but the stylized maple leaf is their best version yet. A simple blue and white jersey with hardly any frills. Can’t get much better than that.
3. New York Rangers
No one does script lettering like the Rangers. New York's jerseys have been mostly untouched throughout history and it’s not hard to see why. In a league of modern logos and fresh ideas, the Rangers will forever have a place in our hearts for their classy look.
2. Pittsburgh Penguins
Between the gorgeous colors and the Penguins' phenomenal logo, Pittsburgh hit a home run with this jersey. This shade of yellow suits the Penguins so well, with this sunflower coloring making the details pop in a very satisfying way. An incredibly crisp and clean jersey all around.
1. Montreal Canadiens
The Canadiens have kept this simple jersey design throughout their entire history and it still works. You couldn’t ask for a more perfect hockey jersey and we don’t see Montreal changing this anytime soon.
