Poll: Who should be the Miami Herald’s High School Athlete of the Week? (Oct. 14)

South Florida’s top athletes were recognized last week in the sports of bowling, cross-country, golf, swimming and volleyball.

This week, we continue a feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week from bowling, cross-country, golf, and volleyball in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, Oct. 17, around 10 p.m. You may vote as often as you like until then. Here are the candidates:

▪ Gabriella Barcia, Miami Lourdes golf: the junior tied for first at 36 during the Girls’ Catholic Quad Golf Tournament at Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables, while helping the Bobcats place second.

▪ Megan Bermejo, Miami Lourdes golf: the senior tied for first at 36 during the Girls’ Catholic Quad Golf Tournament at Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables, while helping the Bobcats place second.

▪ Isabella Bernhardt, Plantation American Heritage volleyball: had 7 kills, 4 service points & 4 digs in a win over Pembroke Pines Somerset Academy and 12 service points, 4 aces, 5 kills, & 4 digs in a win over Pembroke Pines Franklin Academy as the Patriots improved to 14-6 and are ranked No.9 in the state in 4A via MaxPreps.

▪ Joselyn Reyes-Clark, Miami Krop bowling: had high games and high series in wins over Miami High (High Game 178, High Series 481) and Miami Beach (High Game 201, High Series 542) as the Lightning improved to 6-0.

▪ Daniella Fraga, Miami Lourdes cross-country: the junior was runner-up at the Larry Wooten Invitational in a girls’ field of 114 runners in Miami in 21:00.90, while helping the Bobcats finish first of 14 teams.

▪ Marcelo Mantecon, Miami Belen Jesuit cross-country: the sophomore won the 25th annual Great American Cross-Country Festival in Cary, North Carolina. His personal best 14 minutes and 40.2 seconds bested 385 other runners to lead the Wolverines to the team title over 146 teams from 22 states.

▪ Luis Marti, Miami Coral Reef cross-country: the senior won the Larry Wooten Invitational in a boys’ field of 173 runners in Miami in 16:50, while helping the Barracudas win the team title of 21 teams.

▪ Erin McMullen, Miami Doral Academy volleyball: helped lead the Firebirds to a 3-2 mark at the Warrior Volleyball Invitational at Miami Westminster Christian School. She totaled 6 kills & 10 blocks in a win over Ransom Everglades; 8 kills & 3 blocks in a win over St. Brendan; and 7 kills & 3 blocks in a win over Cardinal Gibbons.

▪ Frank Molina, Miami Ferguson bowling: had high game 194 and high series 528 in a 5-2 victory over Coral Reef as the unbeaten Falcons improved to 11-0.

▪ Jonathan Pena, Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy cross-country: placed 18th of 386 runners in 15:17.3 at the 25th annual Great American Cross-Country Festival at WakeMed Park in Cary, North Carolina. The race, featuring top runners from the Northeast and Southeast, totaled 147 teams from 22 states.

▪ Paulina Ramirez, Southwest Ranches Archbishop McCarthy golf: the junior was third overall at 37 to help lead the Mavericks to the team title at the Girls’ Catholic Quad Golf Tournament at Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables.

▪ Samantha Ruiz, Miami Coral Reef cross-country: the senior won the Larry Wooten Invitational in a girls’ field of 114 runners in Miami in 20:24, while helping the Barracudas place second of 14 teams.

▪ Hector Perez Sainz, Miami Columbus golf: the sophomore shot 3-under par 69 to win the VBHS Fighting Indians Invitational at Sandridge Golf Club in Vero Beach, while helping lead the Explorers to the team title.
