Patrick Mahomes adds to his legend by leading Chiefs to win after injury

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15) kneels on the sideline after injuring his ankle in the fourth quarter while playing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday, Nov. 4, 2024, at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes pulled off yet another magical play during Monday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

On the second play of the fourth quarter, Mahomes scrambled from pressure in the red zone and ran toward the sideline. Buccaneers defenders descended on Mahomes, who casually flipped the ball to Samaje Perine for a 7-yard touchdown.

That tied the game 17-17.

Unfortunately, Mahomes was injured when he stopped short on the play, and he needed to be helped from the field. This was a scary moment for Chiefs fans.

Mahomes went into the blue injury tent and backup quarterback Carson Wentz began warming up. After being on the injury report with an ankle issue, there was reason for concern that Mahomes might have to leave the game.

But Mahomes was only checked out by the doctors for a few moments and then was back on the sideline and moving well.

After the defense forced a three-and-out, Mahomes returned to the field, and fans at Arrowhead Stadium were thrilled. Check out this ovation.

Not only did Mahomes come back to the game, but he led a 15-play, 78-yard drive that he capped with a 5-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Hopkins. That gave the Chiefs a 24-17 lead.

Tampa Bay scored a game-tying touchdown with 27 seconds to play, forcing overtime. Mahomes then led the Chiefs to a touchdown drive in the extra period as the Chiefs won 30-24 on Kareem Hunt’s 2-yard touchdown run. The Chiefs drove 70 yards in 10 plays.

“I rolled the ankle,” Mahomes told ESPN after the game. “I rolled it last week and when you re-roll it, it never feels good.”

Fans were amazed by Mahomes’ toughness. And it wasn’t just Chiefs supporters. Here is what they were saying.
