Here's today's NHL Nugget – this Weekend's Way Back When charges back in time to when the Buffalo Sabres got their name.

The owners of Buffalo's new NHL team, which was set to take the ice in 1970, went to the public in search of ideas. And there were many of them.

"A sabre is renowned as a clean, sharp, decisive and penetrating weapon on offense, as well as a strong parrying weapon on defense," as explained in NHL.com's nickname origins page in 2016.
