Leaked WhatsApp messages show reason behind IceDogs owners' suspension
A leaked screenshot of the WhatsApp texts that led to the indefinite suspension of Niagara IceDogs owners has shed some light into the OHL's recent scandal.
Earlier this week, some major news came out of the Jr. Hockey league, as it was announced that the IceDogs were being fined $150,000. On top of that, owners Billy and Joey Burke were suspended indefinitely.
The league's announcement at the time did not share what the reasoning behind the decision was, other than to say that it was related to inappropriate conduct. Since then, however, a leaked transcript appears to show what led to the hefty fine and suspensions.
"Who is the [expletive] that runs the social media," a message from Billy Burke reads.
Joey Burke then replies with more profanities and offensive language toward the person they spoke of.
As the texts show, the Burkes were not happy that a league highlight video only showed one of the IceDogs' goals in a 4-0 win. While being upset is one thing, it is clear these two both stepped way over any acceptable boundaries, and makes their suspensions along with the fine very fitting.
Billy and Joey have since released a joint statement on the matter.

While they will be able to apply for reinstatement in 2024, it is highly unlikely that the Burkes will be able to own a team in any league moving forward. These comments are simply unacceptable, especially in today’s age.
There's a rumor going around that the Niagara IceDogs are being sold

In recent hours, several reporters have speculated that the IceDogs have already been sold, though that has yet to be confirmed. It is an unfortunate distraction for the players on the team, who have had a rough season with a 22-38-4 record, and have done nothing wrong despite the flack they may receive moving forward.
