Former Bruins Defender Hangs Up The Skates

Former Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Irwin announced his retirement from professional hockey on Thursday (Nov. 14).

Irwin spent the 2015-16 season with the Bruins organization. He appeared in two games for Boston, posting zero assists and a minus-5 rating.

Irwin spent the rest of that campaign with the Bruins' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Providence Bruins. In 64 games with Providence, he had five goals, 30 points, and a plus-1 rating.

In 461 games over 11 NHL seasons split between the San Jose Sharks, Bruins, Nashville Predators, Anaheim Ducks, Buffalo Sabres, and Washington Capitals, Irwin had 25 goals, 93 points, and 719 hits.

Irwin, 36, spent this past season down in the AHL with the Abbotsford Canucks, posting five goals and 16 points in 65 games.
