Dolphins sign a quarterback, make four roster moves in advance of Colts game

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill (10) and teammate Blake Ferguson (44) wave goodbye to the New England Patriots fans during fourth quarter of an NFL football game at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2023 in Foxborough, MA.

The Dolphins signed quarterback Tim Boyle to the 53-man roster on Saturday, one of four roster moves in advance of Sunday’s game at the Colts (1 p.m., Fox).

With Skylar Thompson still limited by a rib injury, Boyle is expected to back up starter Tyler Huntley on Sunday.

The Dolphins had an open spot on the 53-man roster because long snapper Blake Ferguson was moved to the reserve/non-football injury list. Ferguson was limited in Friday’s practice because of personal reasons.

With Ferguson out, Miami signed long snapper Matt Overton to the practice squad and elevated him for Sunday’s game. Overton, 39, has played in 139 NFL games.

The Dolphins used their other practice squad elevation on safety/cornerback Nik Needham, who will provide depth amid the expected absence of starting safety Jevon Holland, who is doubtful for Sunday’s game because of a broken bone is his left hand.

The Dolphins on Saturday did not change the injury designations of five players who are listed as questionable: receiver Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring), right tackle Austin Jackson (back), linebacker David Long Jr. (knee), outside linebacker Emmanuel Ogbah (biceps) and Thompson (ribs). All were expected to travel to Indianapolis.

The Dolphins opted to hold off on removing cornerback Cam Smith from injured reserve and he’s out Sunday. He must be moved from injured reserve to the 53-man roster by Wednesday in order to be eligible to play this season.

As for Ferguson, he must sit out at least four games. And if the Dolphins bring him back this season, he would count toward the eight maximum players that a team can bring back from the reserve/injured list or the reserve/non-football injury/illness list.

One of those eight slots was used on Smith (even though he hasn’t yet been activated) and another will be used on Tua Tagovailoa, who can return as early as next week. Another likely will be used on receiver River Cracraft, who is working his way back from a shoulder injury.

Odell Beckham Jr., who came off the physically unable to perform list, does not count toward those eight.
