Connor McDavid downplays Evander Kane's off-ice issues amid Oilers rumors

Connor McDavid revealed that he’s indifferent to public opinion Wednesday regarding the Edmonton Oilers potentially pursuing Evander Kane as a free agent.

"Right now, it's all speculation," McDavid told reporters on Wednesday. "Obviously, Evander is an amazing player and he's had lots of success over the last couple of years. Whatever else is going on, it's not something I look into much."

"I’m not really here to discuss optic issues. If fans don’t like it, or the media doesn’t like it, or whatever. It is what it is.”

Kane was placed on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a buyout on January 8 by the San Jose Sharks after violating COVID-19 protocols. He was suspended 21 games for submitting a fake COVID-19 vaccine card on October 18.

The NHL also investigated gambling, domestic violence and sexual assault allegations levied by Kane’s estranged wife, Anna, in a divorce filing. On October 18, the league stated that the domestic violence allegations levied by Anna Kane against Evander Kane could not be substantiated.

“I’m sure there’s lots of things that go on, on the ice and what not that fans don’t like. We don’t necessarily have to discuss those with you guys,” McDavid said.

“The public opinion is obviously something that matters a lot but we’re here to try to win games.”

McDavid is drawing near-unanimous criticism for his terse dismissal of the allegations surrounding Kane, and a pretty transparent admission that winning at all costs can often be pretty bleak and disappointing, especially from the face of the NHL.

Oilers general manager Ken Holland said Tuesday that he’s spoken to Kane’s agent, Dan Milstein, prompting further speculation that the 29-year-old may be heading to Edmonton shortly. Holland also appeared to grant Kane a preemptive fresh start with the Oilers, and McDavid said that the Oilers GM has the unequivocal support of his captain.

"It's hard to be perfect,” Oilers general manager Ken Holland said. “We're all people. We all make mistakes. Some make big mistakes, some make little mistakes but it's hard to be perfect. And I think if somebody makes a decision or does something in their life and they make a mistake, I think they have to try to learn from it and try to change and then should be entitled to a second opportunity once they do some of those things."
