Chiefs’ Xavier Worthy shares story of NFL team hanging up on him on draft day

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy (1) runs in for a touchdown agains the New Orleans Saints in the fourth quarter on Monday, Oct. 7, 2024, at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Indianapolis Colts selected UCLA defensive lineman Laiatu Latu with the 15th pick in the NFL Draft. That came after apparently making a wrong phone call.

That’s according to Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who was picked 28th overall.

Worthy would know about the Colts’ phone call because he says the team hung up on him during the first round of the NFL Draft. While on “The Rich Eisen Show,” Worthy talked about his unusual draft-day experience.

“Draft day was crazy. I had got a call at 15, 16, I think it was the Colts — hung up the phone in my face,” Worthy said. “It was a little crazy.”

Eisen wanted more details.

“The Colts called my phone on draft day and hung up the phone,” Worthy said. “They said, ‘Hello, this is so and so with the Colts,’ and then on the call they stopped talking, and they hung up.”

Eisen asked if they got disconnected and Worthy said there was no chance that was the case. Worthy then talked about his phone ringing again later that day.

“As the night (went) on, I ended up getting a call from the Chiefs when they traded with Buffalo,” Worthy said. “I really originally didn’t know they traded with Buffalo, so when they were on the clock, I’m seeing the call and I’m like, ‘Oh, this is Buffalo.’

“And then I looked at the thing and it said KC, and I’m like, ‘Oh, it’s the Chiefs. Alright, that’s where I want to be.’”

Worthy said he got a two-word text from quarterback Patrick Mahomes after the draft: “Let’s go.”

Later Mahomes called and Worthy said it was a surreal conversation.

“Man, it’s crazy being a kid, you know what I’m saying, you see Pat doing all this stuff, doing all these crazy passes, and then having an opportunity to play with him is just a different type of feeling,” said Worthy, who is 21 years old. “Just the guy he is outside of football, down-to-earth guy, willing to just do a lot for you and on the field. He’s just a different leader.”
