Chiefs are the 30th team in Super Bowl era to start 8-0. Here’s how the others fared

Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton (34) carries the ball during Super Bowl XX as New England Patriots linebacker Johnny Rembert (55) chases at the Superdome. The Bears defeated the Patriots 46-10.

The Chiefs are part of a small group of teams that have opened a season with eight straight victories, and they can join an even more elite circle with a win Sunday.

With their win Monday over Tampa Bay, the Chiefs became just the 30th team in the Super Bowl era to begin a season with an 8-0 record, per CBS Sports.

If the Chiefs beat the Broncos on Sunday, they’ll be just the fifth defending Super Bowl champion to open a season with nine straight victories.

That would match the Chiefs’ franchise record starting with nine straight wins.

Here’s a look back at all the NFL teams that have opened a season with an 8-0 record. Three things to note:

  1. The 1998 Broncos were the only defending champion who repeated after winning eight straight to start a season

  2. Eight teams have won the Super Bowl after starting 8-0: 1972 Dolphins, 1977 Cowboys, 1985 Bears, 1990 Giants, 1991 Washington, 1998 Broncos, 2006 Colts and 2009 Saints

  3. Every team that was 8-0 won their division save one: The 2013 Chiefs were second in AFC West
