AP Top 25 college football new poll: Texas set to retake No. 1 after Saturday’s upsets

Well, that was something.

A Saturday filled with monumental upsets, with top 10 teams falling to unranked teams left and right, means the new Associated Press Top 25 poll that comes out Sunday will be dramatically different than last week’s.

Four teams ranked in the top 10 lost on Saturday, with three of those teams losing to unranked teams. No. 8 Miami only avoided adding to the chaos because it rallied from 25 points down in the second half to win 39-38 at California.

But Vanderbilt stunning No. 1 Alabama, 40-35, and Arkansas edging No. 4 Tennessee, 19-14, claimed two of the top four. Washington’s 27-17 win over No. 10 Michigan will send the reigning champs down in the new poll.

No. 9 Missouri lost to a fellow ranked team, but the 41-10 final score at No. 25 Texas A&M will surely cause voters to severely punish the Tigers.

Just outside the top 10, No. 11 Southern Cal stumbled and lost 24-17 at Minnesota.

Other ranked teams losing included No. 22 Louisville, which fell 34-27 to SMU at home, and No. 25 UNLV, which lost 44-41 in overtime to Syracuse on Friday night.

As a result of the carnage, look for Texas to move back to No. 1. The Longhorns (5-0) were off this week and only fell from the top spot last week because voters were so impressed with Alabama’s win over Georgia.

Vandy knocked the shine off of that accomplishment.

Ohio State (5-0) figures to move into the No. 2 spot as the Big Ten will take advantage of the SEC’s stumbles to take top-five slots. Alabama and Tennessee will fall, opening up room for No. 6 Oregon (5-0) and No. 7 Penn State (5-0) to replace them among the top five.

Look for No. 12 Mississippi (5-1), which recovered from its own ugly loss to Kentucky a week ago to pound South Carolina 27-3 on the road on Saturday, to vault back into the top 10 as Missouri and Michigan fall out.

Alabama figures to stay in the top 10 because that win over Georgia still carries weight. Tennessee might do the same since the Vols have a win at Oklahoma to bolster its resume.

Miami (6-0) gets credit for resiliency. But, having narrowly escaped losses to unranked teams in consecutive weeks, the Hurricanes will have trouble getting enough credit from voters to climb much higher.

Look for Louisville (3-2) and UNLV (4-1) to disappear from the rankings.

Who could move in?

Pittsburgh (5-0) continues to make its case. The Panthers were second among teams receiving votes who didn’t make the rankings last week.

Arizona (3-2) was first among others receiving votes last week but the Wildcats lost 28-22 at home to Texas Tech on Saturday night so they won’t be moving in. Maybe the Red Raiders (5-1) will get some support.

SMU (5-1) only received four poll points from voters last week so it’s a long climb to the rankings. But a win on the road over a ranked team like Louisville means the Mustangs have a chance to find themselves ranked on Sunday.

Perhaps Nebraska (5-1) or Washington (4-2) will get enough votes to earn a ranking. The Huskers received votes last week and the Huskies beat a top-10 team on Saturday.
