Laura Dern has heaped praise upon her co-star Liam Hemsworth for his performance in the sex scene in their new Netflix movie Lonely Planet.

The duo star in the romantic drama about an author who takes a trip to Morocco in order to get over her writer's block. There, she meets a younger man who is having relationship issues, and they end up getting it on.

Speaking to People, Dern said she was "so lucky" to work with Hemsworth on the project, calling him "literally the safest person I could ever talk through everything in my life with."

"By the time we were doing those scenes, there was nothing we couldn't talk about together and work out creatively, professionally, all of that.

"But we also had a lot of support. We had much, much discussion... [there was] definitely an intimacy coordinator."

Speaking more generally about how sex scenes are handled nowadays, she said it was "incredible... that film and filmmaking have changed so that everyone is comfortable in their voice and can set boundaries comfortably without fear of losing a job or being unpopular."

Although it hasn't been decided yet, Dern said she was keen to do a sequel with Hemsworth, while he pitched the idea of a film in which their characters go and become scuba diving instructors in Tahiti.

"I like it," she said in response. "That sounds perfect."

The film hasn't received a strong reception from critics, with a common theme among reviews being that it's just not all that interesting.

Earlier this year, Dern spoke about the long-awaited season three of Big Little Lies, stating that the creative team behind it are "working diligently at dreaming up".

Lonely Planet is available to stream on Netflix now.
