The redesigned 2024 Toyota Tacoma mid-size pickup gains an optional hybrid powertrain and two new off-road-oriented models, boosting its performance, capability, and fuel efficiency.

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma's new i-Force Max hybrid powertrain is a $3700 option on TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited trim levels. It's also standard on the new off-road-oriented Trailhunter (shown) and TRD Pro models.

The Tacoma's Max setup consists of a 278-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder, a 48-hp electric motor, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and a nickel-metal hydride battery with 1.4 kilowatt-hours of estimated usable capacity.

Total system output is 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque.

All Max-equipped Tacomas are four-wheel-drive crew-cab models with a five-foot cargo bed, though the Trailhunter offers the option of a longer six-foot bed.

The overlanding-oriented Trailhunter features numerous mechanical upgrades, including a wider wheel track, 33-inch tires, Old Man Emu dampers with remote reservoirs, a front anti-roll bar disconnect system, and much more.

Also included is a snorkel intake and additional underbody protection.

The TRD Pro is similarly upgraded as the Trailhunter, though it swaps in 2.5-inch Fox internal-bypass dampers.

The TRD Pro also features a TRD cat-back exhaust system, secondary Fox hydraulic bump stops on its rear axle, and Toyota's IsoDynamic suspension seats.

Though pricing for the Tacoma hybrid opens at $47,795 for the TRD Sport model, the Trailhunter and TRD Pro start at $64,395 and $65,395, respectively.

The hybrid setup brings a modest boost to the Tacoma's fuel economy, with most Max-equipped models increasing from an EPA-combined 20 mpg to 23 mpg.
