For the first time in a long time, the new Ford Ranger gets a powerful V-6 option.
The 2024 Ford Ranger's base engine is an EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-four with 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The twin-turbo V-6 heats things up with 315 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque.
Both powertrains used an identical 10-speed automatic transmission, and despite their power and weight differences, have a maximum towing capacity of 7500 pounds.
For now, Ford is only offering the twin-turbo V-6 engine on XLT and Lariat Rangers equipped with four-wheel drive.
White fenders, white-wall tires, chrome wheels, and a tan cloth interior. The Car and Driver staff are not responsible for these questionable choices.
Regardless of which engine is powering it, the Ranger comes with a four-door crew cab and five-foot truck bed.
During testing, the more powerful V-6 proved quick, reaching 60 mph in 5.6 seconds.
Did you know? The engine block of the 2.7-liter (as well as the engine block for the Ranger Raptor's 3.0-liter unit) V-6 is made from compacted graphite iron, which allows its block walls to be thinner due to its increased strength of traditional cast iron.
The new Ranger is 2.2 inches wider and about three inches taller than the previous generation, which didn't offer a V-6 option.
On our 75-mph highway fuel economy test, the Ranger completed 200 miles at 20 mpg. That's 3 mpg short of its EPA estimate.
