  • The Ford Mustang GTD is Ford’s wildest road-going Mustang to date, with a pushrod rear suspension, wide body, and 815 hp supercharged V8 under the hood.

  • Ford took the Mustang GTD to the Nürburgring to lay a lap down and try to be the first factory-backed road car from a US automaker to break the seven-minute barrier.

  • This video is a teaser for a longer documentary that’s coming called Road to the Ring.

If you were curious about Ford’s lap around the Nürburgring, Ford documented the entire trip for an upcoming documentary called Road to the Ring. This teaser trailer for the documentary hints at Ford's goal for the journey: a sub-seven-minute lap around the Green Hell. While we don't know the official time yet, that seems well within the limits of Ford’s wildest production Mustang ever.

In the short teaser video below, we get some beauty shots of the Mustang GTD ripping around the Nürburgring, some sound of the exhaust, and short clips of interviews with the people involved with the lap attempt. One person filmed outlines that no North American automaker has ever broken into the six-minute range with a production car, and that is explicitly Ford's target.

And, that sub-seven-minute laps should be well within the sights of the Mustang GTD. Combining the potent 5.2-liter V8's 815 hp with an aggressive aerodynamic package and a race-car-inspired rear suspension, the Mustang GTD should be able to make an impressive lap around the 'Ring. However, more interesting than its final lap time, it will be fascinating to see the behind-the-scenes effort that goes into one of these attempts.

It's not clear when Ford plans to release its official time, or when the full documentary is coming, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see it drop before the end of the year. It's also not certain that Ford cracked into the six-minute range with this special pony, but considering the hardware, and the fact that there's a documentary, it's a pretty safe bet.
