We’ve noticed Ohio troopers are kind of hit or miss on pursuits. Sometimes they pull off brilliant maneuvers, even pitting fleeing suspects beautifully. Other times it’s like watching an episode of the Three Stooges. Unfortunately, the included chase is of the latter type with the trooper losing the suspect for an embarrassing, almost unbelievable reason.

Cop orders a teenage driver to hit his cruiser.

First off, the suspect is in some little Hyundai crossover. We don’t know the model because we don’t care. It’s an appliance vehicle with a tiny, underpowered engine and it should be easy prey for any cop who has pursuit training.

While the suspect feigns compliance and pulls over at first, his intention to flee comes into full focus right after the trooper gets out of his cruiser. That fleeing happens slowly at first, so the trooper doesn’t struggle to catch up.

And yet the chase isn’t over quickly. Chalk it up to pursuit policies, a lack of proper training, or something else, this trooper just trails behind the gerbil-powered generic crossover even when the suspect gets caught behind slower-moving traffic.

In other states like Florida, Georgia, and Arkansas, this chase would’ve been over in under a minute. Instead, the pursuit stretches on for over ten minutes and would’ve kept going had the trooper not done something so embarrassingly boneheaded he could no long give chase.

As the pursuit goes from the highway to surface streets, the suspect goes from major roads to residential streets, probably to try outmaneuvering the trooper since he can’t outrun him. That doesn’t work either.

We don’t know if the suspect is a genius or just happened to find the weak point of the trooper. Whichever it is, the sad truth is grass was the downfall of this cop. As the Hyundai cuts across a lawn, the trooper follows and his cruiser gets stuck in the grass.

It’s just so dumb and yet it works. When the trooper tells dispatch he’s stuck, the guy sounds so bummed. How embarrassing.
