  • Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares will retire in early 2026 when his contract expires, the company has confirmed.

  • Stellantis has begun the search for his replacement, which it said will be in place by the fourth quarter of 2025.

  • Several other managerial changes were announced, including Santo Ficili taking on the role of CEO for both Alfa Romeo and Maserati.

There's a big shake-up happening at Stellantis. Last night, the global automotive giant announced a series of changes among its upper management, which the company says will allow it to renew its "focus on its key business priorities." But the most notable change is that Stellantis confirmed that its CEO, Carlos Tavares, will retire at the end of his contract in early 2026.

Tavares is the first CEO of Stellantis, stepping into the role when the company was created following the merger in 2021 between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Groupe PSA. Tavares had previously been the CEO of Groupe PSA since 2014. During his tenure at Groupe PSA, he split off the DS luxury brand from Citroen in 2014 and bought Opel and Vauxhall from General Motors in 2017. Stellantis said that it has begun the process of finding a successor and that it should complete its search by the fourth quarter of 2025.

Stellantis is undergoing a series of other shifts, effective immediately. These changes include Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa taking on the role of North American Chief Operating Officer, with former COO Carlos Zarlenga's next position yet to be announced. The Stellantis' Pro One commercial vehicle division Jean Philippe Imparato will also assume the title of COO for Enlarged Europe, with the outgoing COO Uwe Hochgeschurtz leaving Stellantis.

Imparato steps aside as head of Alfa Romeo, with Santo Ficili taking on the CEO appointment at both Alfa Romeo and Maserati. Outgoing Maserati boss Davide Grasso's new position will be revealed later, Stellantis said.

The moves come during tough times for Stellantis, with sales down 17 percent across the company's six brands through the third quarter of 2024. Earlier this year, Tavares suggested that Stellantis could kill off brands that struggled to turn a profit. While sales were down for Jeep, Dodge, and Ram, the three brands still sell a notable number of vehicles and will launch new electric models in the next several months.

But Alfa Romeo and Fiat are tiny drops in the market, with just 6826 and 786 sales, respectively, through the first nine months of 2024, and the Chrysler brand continues to fade into obscurity with just one model left on sale after the discontinuation of the 300 sedan.
