RIP Kum & Go
Whether we’re talking about Buc-ee’s, Wawa or QT, we here at Jalopnik love a good gas station chain. So it is with great sadness that we have to report the death of a beloved gas station name. Before you know it, the name Kum & Go will have kum and gone. Unfortunately for all of us, Maverik, which bought the company last year, has decided the Kum & Go name can no longer stay, CNN reports.
Maverik is, of course, a significantly worse name for a gas station, so you’d think it would have purchased Kum & Go so it could rename all of its inferior gas stations something better, but no. The folks in charge decided to ruin something perfectly good and pure for no reason whatsoever. Did they not think about the middle schoolers? What kind of jokes will they be able to make now? Hmmm? Bet you didn’t think about that, did you, Maverik?
A spokesperson for the company told CNN that getting rid of the Kum & Go name was part of its “process of rebranding Kum & Go stores, with the intent to unify our entire combined footprint under the Maverik brand.” That said, the plan isn’t to rename every single Kum & Go at once. “While we’re committed to this vision, we are taking a thoughtful, market-by-market approach to ensure the best customer experience before confirming each state’s rebrand,” they explained.
The company that became Kum & Go was originally founded in 1959 by Bill Krause and his father-in-law T.S. Gentle, but the iconic name didn’t appear until 1975. According to Krause, the K and G were chosen to represent his and his father-in-law’s last names, while the name itself was chosen because “it had the fewest number of letters so the signs would be cheaper.” And he made a great point, too. If you’re just looking to Kum & Go, why spend any more money than you have to?
