A rare piece of NASCAR and muscle car history is set to cross the auction block as Richard Petty’s personal 1970 Plymouth Superbird goes up for sale at the Mecum Kissimmee 2025 event on January 18. Known for its striking aerodynamics and unique Mopar wing design, the Superbird became iconic in the racing world, and this particular model, owned by “The King” himself, is sure to capture the attention of collectors and fans alike.
Richard Petty, a seven-time NASCAR champion, was one of the few who truly understood the aerodynamic edge of Mopar’s wing cars like the Superbird. Petty’s personal Superbird features a factory-original 440 V8 engine paired with an automatic transmission. Although some may prefer a manual, the automatic drivetrain ensures a smoother experience and retains its original configuration, adding to its authenticity.
Petty’s Garage performed a full restoration on the car in 2014, bringing it back to showroom condition. The Alpine White paint, black vinyl roof, and detailed graphics are all pristine, while Petty's signature under the clearcoat on the trunk lid and his personal message on the dash—“Take care of my car!”—make this Superbird a standout. The interior also features embroidered Petty profiles on the seat headrests, adding a personal touch from the NASCAR legend himself.
To further authenticate this one-of-a-kind vehicle, the Superbird comes with a title in Petty Enterprises, Inc.’s name and a signed letter from Richard Petty verifying that it’s the only Superbird he’s ever owned. Its documented history includes appearances on numerous TV shows, solidifying its celebrity status.
Collectors and fans will have their chance to bid on this historic vehicle at the Mecum Kissimmee event, where it promises to be one of the most anticipated lots. For anyone looking to own a piece of NASCAR and muscle car history, Petty’s Superbird is a rare opportunity.
