Porsche unleashes the 99X — Is this the ultimate Formula E car?

Porsche has just revealed the 99X, their new Formula E entry for the upcoming GEN3 Evo generation. At the wheel of the Porsche 99X will be World Champion Pascal Wehrlein and António Félix da Costa for the works TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team as well as former World Champion Jake Dennis and new Porsche works driver Nico Müller for the two Andretti Formula E customer cars.

The Porsche 99X boasts astonishing performance metrics

The 1900 lbs (including the driver) Porsche 99X is powered by a 38.5 kWh lithium-ion battery putting out 300 kW or 408 hp. The regenerative brakes are capable of max 600 kW recuperation with a claimed 50% of the drive energy per race coming from this brake energy recovery. Or in layman's terms, the car can recharge itself a lot while decelerating.

When parked in the pits, the 99X's charging system is capable of the same 600 kW peak charging power.

New innovations give Porsche a leg up in Formula E

The German marque proudly announced new innovations aimed to allow the 99X to dominate the competition. Available FWD engagement will give the cars temporary AWD during qualifying duels, race starts, and Attack Mode, resulting in an increased 350 kW (476 hp) output and a two-second 0-62 mph time.

Hankook has also developed new iON high-performance tires that can withstand the forces applied during these high-speed runs.

Helping keep those tires in contact with the pavement at all times is a modified front wing for maximum downforce.

Porsche dressed the 99X in Taycan-inspired colors

A car with such exotic performance figures deserves an equally exotic color scheme, a sentiment that Porsche thankfully echoes. The 99X is finished in Purple Sky Metallic and Shade Green Metallic, the same colors used on the Taycan Turbo GT, Porsche's most powerful production car.

The 99X takes the field during pre-season testing in Valencia

The Porsche 99X will make its first public appearance at the pre-season testing sessions in Valencia, Spain from November 4-7. Female drivers Gabriela Jílková and Marta García will also join Pascal Wehrlein and António Félix da Costa during testing.

Formula E's 11th season officially begins on December 7th in Sao Paulo, Brazil with worldwide races taking place in Mexico City, Jeddah, Miami, Monaco, Tokyo, Shanghai, Jakarta, Berlin, and London.

Formula E showcases the possibilities of future technologies

Few races can claim to be on the bleeding edge of innovation quite like Formula E. Manufacturers who field cars in the series often trickle down the technology developed for their race cars to their regular production cars.

The sheer performance figures of these electric race cars are unlike anything we've seen from combustion cars. A sub-two-second 0-62 mph is not an easy concept to wrap your head around, showcasing the otherworldly capabilities of electric powertrains.

It's unlikely customers will see such speed on city streets, but we're excited to see how many of the Formula E developments will make it to our local dealerships.
