Yahoo Autos Porsche Giving Carrera GT Owners Brand-New Michelin Tires, Free
Porsche is offering Carrera GT owners a free set of modern tires for their nearly 20-year-old sports cars.
The automaker worked with Michelin on creating a model-specific version of the Pilot Sport Cup 2.
According to Porsche, the new tires improve feel and significantly reduce the stopping distance of the Carrera GT.
You know that super common problem where you don't put enough miles on your manual sports car that churns out 604 horsepower from the mid-mounted aluminum V-10 engine strapped behind your seat, so the tires start to rot? If so, first, congrats on owning such a spectacular car; second, there's a solution to your problem! Porsche is now offering Carrera GT owners a free set of modern tires to go on their two-decade-old sports cars.
New Rubber for an Old Car
The automaker worked with Michelin to create a model-specific version of the Pilot Sport Cup 2 performance tires for the Carrera GT. This marks the second time Porsche and Michelin have launched a new tire for the Carrera GT, with the first coming in 2013.
According to Porsche, the modern tires improve driving dynamics and driver feedback for the aging supercar. "The new tires do not just make the Carrera GT faster, they also make it easier for the driver to pilot the car in a spirited manner," said Porsche development driver Jörg Bergmeister. Along with the extra feedback, the new tires improve stopping distance by up to eight feet from 62 mph and up to 39 feet when stopping from 124 mph.
The new-tire giveaway is also related to the resolution of Porsche's recall of the 489 Carrera GTs last April over potential suspension failure. A Porsche spokesperson confirmed to Car and Driver that owners of the cars will receive complimentary maintenance after an extended period of idle time, along with receiving the set of the new tires for free. Owners not affected by the recall can contact their local Porsche Center to find out how to get theirs, Porsche said.
