Mercedes-AMG is reportedly advancing the development of a groundbreaking all-electric supercar, set to debut before the decade's end. The project draws inspiration from the Vision One-Eleven concept, which was unveiled in 2022 as a tribute to the iconic C111 series of technology demonstrators from the 1960s and 1970s.

The Vision One-Eleven showcased cutting-edge technology, including axial-flow motors developed by YASA, a high-performance electric motor specialist acquired by Mercedes in 2021. These motors, lighter and smaller than traditional radial-flow motors, offer high power output in a compact form. However, the complexity and cost of manufacturing axial-flow motors have limited their widespread use. Mercedes, however, plans to produce these motors at its Berlin plant, and the upcoming electric supercar is likely to benefit from this innovation.

YASA’s axial-flow motors generate an impressive 489 horsepower while weighing only 53 pounds. Mercedes is exploring multiple motor configurations for its future performance models, including three and four-motor setups. With a focus on lightweight construction, the AMG electric supercar will likely achieve exceptional performance, surpassing the capabilities of the current AMG One, which holds the Nürburgring production car lap record.

The new electric supercar is expected to be built on AMG’s upcoming AMG.EA platform, which will also underpin an electric sedan slated for release within the next 12 months. While the supercar will aim for even greater performance, it will likely use liquid-type lithium-ion batteries instead of the more experimental solid-state batteries Mercedes recently announced breakthroughs for.

AMG's foray into electric vehicles began with the SLS AMG Electric Drive in 2014, which delivered 740 horsepower, making it the most powerful EV of its time. With lessons learned from its F1 program and continued innovation, Mercedes-AMG is poised to revolutionize the electric supercar landscape.
