Fatal Road Rage Shooting Provides An Important Lesson

Yet another fatal road rage shooting happened not too long ago in a suburb of Baltimore, Maryland. While we’ve seen so many of these lately, this shooting comes with some extra complications since the shooter has claimed he fired in self defense.

Texas woman has been accused of running her boyfriend off the road.

According to Anne Arundel County Police Department, which is the law enforcement agency investigating the shooting, police were initially called to the scene at about 8:20 pm on November 7. When they arrived, they found a 51-year-old man, Scott David Guhse of Glen Burnie, with multiple gunshot wounds as he laid in the road.

When fire department personnel arrived on the scene, they pronounced Guhse dead at the scene. So immediately the investigation went from possible assault from a road rage incident to possibly homicide or manslaughter.

But wait, there’s more. The 22-year-old male shooter stayed on the scene instead of taking off. And he had quite the story about firing on the older man in self defense.

Police can’t just take someone’s word for a situation like this, especially when someone is dead. But the police department in an official statement did say witnesses seemingly backed up the shooter’s story.

Initial findings allege that the younger man was riding on his motorcycle when the other guy in his car started tailgating him and driving erratically. Then the older man pulled up alongside the motorcyclist and shouted at him, we’re sure only nice things.

Then the car almost hit the motorcycle, allegedly, running the rider off the road. That’s when the rider and witnesses claim the older man got out of his vehicle and charged towards the younger man while brandishing a hammer.

If you don’t think a hammer is a deadly weapon, well you should volunteer to have someone take a few swings at your unprotected head with one. The 22-year-old pulled out his handgun, which he has a permit to carry concealed, and fired, striking the other guy. If all of that is true, and that’s what police investigators are obviously going to determine, this sounds like a case of self defense.

But what led up to the older man tailgating and otherwise acting aggressive towards the motorcyclist? Does it even matter? We don’t know, but police are asking anyone who has information about the incident to contact them.

Why road rage is such a problem these days is a question we can’t answer entirely. But this incident should teach people one thing: you never know who might be carrying a gun. For that reason alone, you should just not get into a road rage incident.
