Honda's top-of-the-line performance vehicles are among 1.7 million vehicles across the United States subject to recall after thousands of reports regarding steering problems with the automaker's vehicles, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Specifically, the issue originates from the steering gearbox worm wheel, a part that Honda says was improperly produced. The result of this production deficiency is a swelling worm wheel protruding into the worm gear, creating a sort of binding inside the steering gearbox. In more simple terms, Honda says that there is a potential for significantly increased steering effort should this steering gearbox failure occur, prompting the company to issue a precautionary recall.

The 2024–2025 Acura Integra Type S and 2023–2025 Honda Civic Type R are among the most notable vehicles being recalled, but hardly the only ones. A total of 1.7 million Honda models are subject to the recall, which was officially announced on October 3. The 2022–2025 Honda Civic, 2023-2025 CR-V, 2023-2025 HR-V, and 2023-2025 non-Type S Acura Integra are all included, with the NHTSA estimating that about one percent of the nearly 1.7 million units recalled will actually turn out to suffer from the problem.

Filings with the NHTSA say that owners should look out for an "abnormal noise and/or a momentary sticky feeling when the vehicle is in operation and the steering wheel is turned." Complaints filed by owners of this array of Honda vehicles on the NHTSA include a consistent mention of a progressively sticky steering wheel feel, especially at high speeds.

There is a remedy available, Honda says. Dealers will replace the worm gear spring and redistribute or add grease as necessary, free of charge, NHTSA says. Notably, Honda engineers adjusted the worm wheel pressure angle (tooth tips) control value as well as the spring load specification for further assurance. Revised steering gearboxes were introduced in models produced after August 30, 2024. Owners who have paid out of pocket for issues related to the steering gearbox may be eligible for compensation, as well.

This recall was prompted by a federal probe of the steering issue back in March 2023. Honda says it received its first complaint of the issue back in September 2021, prompting to company to begin an investigation in November 2022. Working with NHTSA, Honda continued to revise its steering gearbox production processes throughout 2023 and 2024, though the rate of complaints this summer was what ultimately caused the recall. Overall, NHTSA says it has received reports of 13 crashes related to the issue.
